  • Driving in 2wd if needed.

    G'day all,

Just curious if somehow you wreck the front diff/cv's etc you could remove the front drive shaft and travel to your destination via hwy in 2wd without causing any other problems?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,

    RT

This would be a last resort if you was stuck somewhere without any other options. And if your front Diff. wasn't stuffed it would be after driving with the drive shafts out due to losing Diff. oil from where the drive shafts go I suspect.

Constant 4WDs, you can remove either prop shaft ( between t-case and diff ) and lock the centre diff. This will get you going in front or rear wheel drive.
Only seen it done on Land Rovers, but Prados are essentially the same design so don't see why it wouldn't work.

Friends with a AWD 100 series LC had a similar scenario and I think he said he was suprised but it wouldn't drive.

Yes you can drive a prado in 2wd. We have done this in a 5sp manual. Removed the front shaft, locked the center diff and drove the car. The prado has a semi floating rear diff so you cannot remove a axle and drive. The front you can remove the cv's and drive shafts, plug the holes and remove the front shaft, lock the center and drive but if you could move/tow the car to a road call a tilt tray.

A friend of mine gave me a call yesterday. He blew his front diff on a 100 series with IFS. He remove the prop shafts and drive shaft and then locked the centre diff and is now driving in 2wd.
