Righto wengnuts, I'm confused. Is it Kelvin or Kev? I thought I was going mad for a moment there until I went back through some posts.

      Bugger!

Will be keen to hear how this pans out! one thing i've always worried about when getting right into it is doing some damage to the diff.

would be interested in how much it was to fix too (knowing it's a warranty job but it's gotta still have a value)

Mate, I'm just thinking how the Camry would look with a 2" lift kit and your spare set of GrandCraps tucked under the guards.

Worth a go I reckon

My 120 is back! 8)

Windsor Toyota were great. No bitchin' they just got on with doing the job and looking after me, loan car and all - no charge.

Here's a photo of the damage:

Saw the invoice on the counter, $1,285! Phew!

So I'm back on the track and very happy. Will feel even better when the Air Locker is installed week after next.

          Thanks all for your posts.

                  G'day,

I take it you've been through this yourself.? I'm not aware of any upgrade, they replaced the crown wheel and pinion gear with new items. As far as upgrades are concerned, I've ordered a air locker, should be installed week after next.

The TD blow rear diffs just as easially as the V6
I did mine going up a hill at the springs 4wd park last year.
Had to get it towed back to towoomba, where toyota replaced it under waranty no questions..

I have just recently put in a tjm prolocker so we'll see how that goes.

im now a member of two clubs

the "ive broken a rear prado diff" club (not very exclusive)
                          and the
"ive got a rear prolocker" club (somewhat more exclusive)
                          ;-)

Just over $2k for the rear prolocker, but i did have the compressor already (and only needed the conversion kit)
And i was also getting a fair bit of other work done at the time so its probably a better than average price (i hope so anyhow)

The locker switches are well designed with orange leds (that dont heat up) and are encased in a "shoulder guard" thingi that stops them from sticking out and getting snagged/smashed off

I thought this issue was closed. I should have known better.

I took the 120 to Macquarie 4x4 to have my ARB AirLocker fitted to the rear diff this week. After dropping it off and yakking to the fellas in the workshop about the installation - I mentioned the previous work by Toyota and that I'm glad they are opening the diff just in in case there are any problems in there.

Before I left the showroom (can't help myself getting other bits for the 120  ) one of the service guys came to me and showed me a rag covered in steel fragments.  :x The entire diff housing was full of crud that hadn't been cleaned out from the Toyota job after the diff failed. I had to get back to work so I left it with them while they pulled the diff further apart.

After about one hour, the owner of the workshop phoned me saying that it was so bad that they don't want to continue with the installation until Toyota arranged for the diff housing to be completely cleaned out (they didn't have the spare man hours to waste fixing Toyota's stuff up), and all bearings and seals were replaced with new items. So I made a couple of calls to the Service Manager at Windsor Toyota, they arranged a coconut from their workshop to go and clean out the housing and they provided the new parts required. I also extracted a free car from them as I was stuck down the valley with no transport home.

So the stuff up made my 1 day diff lock install into a 2.5 day job.

Needless to say, I'm far from happy with the fact that Windsor Toyota did a shitty job fixing my diff when it blew. It was bad enough that the diff failed in the first place and left me in the lurch, but this really is the icing on the cake.

I'm waiting for my head to cool somewhat before I decide whether to pen a letter to the dealer principal or Toyota Australia.

The sad thing is that this isn't an isolated case. There has been mention on this forum of someone on the 4WDMonthly forum with the same problem. So it seems we are on the "Crappy Toyota Service Department" roundabout again.

Sorry to crap on with it, but it's good to get the shit off my liver.

                              Drew.
