  • Oil Leak

    Gday Guys

Got up yesterday morning to shift my prado and found a pool of oil underneath it. Got down and had a look and noticed it was dripping from the front side of the gearbox where the front drive shaft comes out of. Has anyone else had this problem. My warranty ran out on the 21 of October and toyota have said that i have to pay to bill. Unfortunately i live in a remote area and am putting it on a truck this morning to get it to the nearest town. I have always loved the reliability of Toyotas as i have owned them all my life but finally the toyota bubble for me has burst.

Im guessing its a seal but if anyone has any ideas or have had it happen to them i would love to know. The prado has only done 86000.

    Enjoy the weekend.

    Re: Oil Leak

When I had my 98 GXL the right front side developed a similar leak. I did a job on the front shocks so did the seals at the same time as it was pretty straight forward with all the bits out.

The only hassle was that they use 2 different seals for left and right. And you have to be carefull with them not to push the right hand seal too far into the axle tube or it won't seal properly. I had to wait a week for one of the seals to arrive ex east coast so the car was up on stands for a while.

That was at about 115,000km and 9 years. Then the rear mainseal let go on the engine (V6) and it was off to the shop to get that one fixed as well as chuck in a new clucth at the same time whilst the box was out. But there were no further issues when I sold the car last year.

      Re: Oil Leak

      Hi diesel
Took off the under body gaurds prior to the Prado going in for the Bullbar mount recall job.
      Found this:
      Coming from here:
Left hand drive shaft of the front diff.
Had Toyota dealer service mechanics repair it. They booked us an hour and a half to replace it and about $12.00 for parts.
D!cks left oil over the diff and cross member, Had to use the Hot wash at work today to clean it all off.
My theory is if you keep it clean, you can see if there is a leak.
      Cheers Troy
