  • 6 speed driveline description

    Hi All,

Could anyone point me to a description of the manual driveline used with the D4D engine? I had a browse through these forums and searched the internet, but couldn't find much.

I am looking at getting a 2008 Prado "Standard" and I want to know how the drive is transferred to the wheels... is it constant 4WD? Is there a centre diff lock? Is it one of those systems where 100% of power goes to back wheels, and is only transferred to the front when slippage is detected? Are there any viscous couplings?

I currently do a fair amount of off-road work in my Landrover Defender, and I am wondering how the Prado stacks up from a driveline perspective.

    Cheers,
    Dan

    Hi Dan,
I am on my notepad at present in Brisvegas without much data so here goes, the 6 speed manual gearbox is coupled to the transfer case which has a chain drive to the front output shaft to the front differential (not LSD), as you probably know the front drive arrangement is IFS. Rear drive is taken through the transfer case via a "Torsen C" epicyclic gear train to the rear LSD differentail. The drive train is "full-time" Toyota version VF4, the High-Low rang reduction gear and the center differential lock are operated manually by means of the shift lever. If HDC (hill decent control), ATRC (active traction control) and all those modern must haves are fitted then the center differential lock operation will be electrical instead of manual. The Torsen C differential/ drive train allows for 60% Rear-40% Front torque distribution, which is always biased towards the rear, torque distribution will vary depending on driving conditions. The Drivetrain on My 6 speed manual 07 GXL has the manual centre diff lock. I had had my truck in some interesting spots (hard) and no problems to date, there are some members who really give their vehicles a good work out and I am sure a quick search will find them some members have also joined infamous Diff Club I won't elaborate but you dont want to go there.
Gear train ratios I do have, but not with me, hope this helps a little.

Cheers for the quick reply! So that sounds like it is a "proper" 4WD.

I had a quick read up on the Torsen-3 diff, and it is all a bit above my head...

Does it work well when driving at crawling speeds? eg: up a steep rocky slope with heavy cross-axling? From what I can gather, the torsen-3 diff is installed on a bunch of high performance AWD sports cars, and seems like more of a device for on-road control/handling (from my naive perspective).

Yes the Torsen does have the advantages aimed at on road performance, with emphysis placed on torque distribution when cornering etc. and having driven a number of Landrovers, Pootrols Highluxes over the years (all manuals), the Prado driveline seems very much aimed at on road performance, coupled with good off road performance only limited by the IFS. But don't underestimate the Prado it can do things my last truck a Pootrol could not and in comfort I might add crawling in low range with a 2.5t Kimberly Kamper attached, I am one of the more senior members of the Ppers. If I did heaps of off road stuff I would own a 90 series V8 and they even look light on now.

Actually, if the centre diff can be locked, it shouldn't matter what the centre diff is? So for off-road use I imagine this is fine.
