Learned friends,
Please excuse the long winded post and help me out!
This is a bit of a how hard would it be question... Does anyone out there have any thoughts on how hard would it be to take a D4D Grande (or VX) and swap the transmission across to a manual??
SWMBO has been allocated an AT prado on site and is , it's gutless and horrible to drive compared to the MT apparently, and we are potnetially looking at a late 120 D4D with some extra fluff.
My initials thoughts were the following process
1) Procure said Grande/VX
2) Find a D4D manual that has been convenitently rolled over by a mining colleague
3) Swap from 2) to 1) the following
a) manual gearbox (duh!!)
b) clutch & bell housing assembly
c) potentially tailshafts (from the 90 series thread in reverse)
d) gear lever and interior trim bits (MT lever sits forward of AT lever)
Questions (maybe for someone with access to the factory service CD)
- Am I missing something major that needs to be swapped?
- What about the ECU, is it different form AT to MT?
- What about some of the Grande trickery eg DSC, DAC, are these completely incompatible ie will do damage to MT vehicle , or they just won't work?
- Is this something for a good transmission workshop, or is it more specialised job, or is it easy enough for someone with a socket set, trolley jack and too much time on his hands?
- can the exisiting Grande transfer case be retained (with electic CDL)
- I'm assuming the 5AT (low km) is worth a fair bit of coin compared to the 6MT (also low KM), so the actual cost of the conversion would be mostly labour?
- A lot of engine swap threads talk of lots of teething issues, given that it's a prado to prado swap, is there
I know the 5AT is a good bit of kit, there are heaps of good arguments for AT over MT in a 4wd, and doing this would trash the resale but I'm interested in the logistics of the exercise, given a preference for an MT (rather than another argument about the the merits of AT vs MT, this month's free circular argument is available in the "Bull bars under threat thread")
I also think it's worth bearing in mind, the UK LC120 LC4/LC5 (VX/Grande equivalent) was availabe in MT, so it can't be impossible, but it may be difficult...
Oh, and Fishnut (yes you...) no comments about stalling AT'ss less in sand (I think I was down to 5 times on the last Wilbinga trip ops
Cheers
