My 2004 VX Prado came back from a service with the news the High Mount Stop light was not working and needed replacement at $300+. I hope to replace the LED strip or put in a replacement from a wrecker. There are no screws on the outside and it looks inaccessible from the inside even after removing the top rear door trim. Any advice appreciated!

Maybe it snaps in from the outside

You're not the only one it seems where Toyota wants $300 for it.

Makes me think that the whole thing is a sealed unit. Best that you check it is not a wiring problem. What did the dealer do during the service?

There are three tabs on the top that can be depressed with a length of thin celluloid or a plastic spatula from the outside while manipulating bottom tabs from the inside with a small screw driver ( pop the inside upper trim off first!) The whole light pops out with not a lot of force, just wriggle, but the foam seal gets shredded. The LEDs had failed. I cut a hole each end in the red lens and inserted a $13 LED strip from Jaycar with re soldered wires to the plug and fabricated a new foam neoprene seal from Bunnings, tested the brake light before pushing the assembly back and then completed the repair for about $22 instead of the $330 + labor Toyota wanted.
