A lot easier way would be to take the wires off the heated rear screen ( never gets used anyway) and join the wires to the work light. The switch is already on the dash and all the wiring is done. Thats how I did mine ,,works for me.

Does anyone know of any issues with current draw on the circuit for work lights, compared to the rear window demister/heater?

The rear window demister/heater would draw heaps more amps than any work light . The light especially a LED work light works fine

One problem I see with this Andrew is that the rear light will always come on when in reverse. For a light mounted above the spare wheel I don't believe you should do this as Mr Plod may object - it is illegal to have a reverse light this high.

You could use a two way (on/off/on) switch for the rear light where one way it switches to the 12V feed to your relay and the other feeds to the switch feed to the relay - that way you can have the option to turn it on, let it switch with the reverse lights or have it off.

I was thinking more about the pic that Jus10 posted where the light is in the center of the spare wheel. Would Mr Plod object to that one too?

That one would be fine (the limit is something like 1m above the ground) but Peter (OP) has one mounted above the spare wheel.

OK, but I do like your switch idea. Circuit now should be:

How many cops do you reverse in front of then? You would have to be pretty unlucky to have issues with police on this one - most would just assume it is a work light only....

I was already planning on having a three way rocker for this purpose. There might be some reason to turn it off when in reverse (reversing a caravan / trailer etc)

Obviously the other option is to mount reverse light down low off the tow bar and work light off pole attached to spare bracket - a lot of extra work for the minimal chance of trouble with po-po

Just making the point so people know. It's a bit like the three driving lights issue - most people know it's illegal, what they choose to do is up to them. Same with people who drive round with fishing rod holders on the bullbar or spotties mounted on the bar but above the bonnet line - all illegal and rarely pulled up on it but see what happens to your insurance cover or what the Police do if you are in an accident.

I can see it now, you have the rear light on when reversing and some idiot runs in the back of you because he was texting and didn't see you. He claims he was blinded by your light and all of a sudden it's your fault and your insurance company doesn't want to know as you have an illegal light fitted.

If I ever get around to fitting mine, I think I'll just go with a simple on or off. That way I can use it as light around camp plus, if needed, I can flick it on when reversing.

That's what I did with mine, plus it's connected to the second battery in case it gets left on.

I'll be running mine from the second battery as well.

That's the plan Barry. I mean how lazy can you buggers be with an auto reverse switch just flick the switch when you need it!
