  • Front LH headlight reflector loose and broken low beam globe problem

Hi All, great site, plenty of useful information here.
I'm hoping to gain some insight to my problem and would be grateful for any useful replies.

So here's the problem: I have a low beam light globe that has broken twice. Looking at the reflector housing it appears to be loose inside the main unit. In fact it can be moved around by hand when holding the globe from behind. I took it off the vehicle to see if the light can be taken apart but it seems to be sealed. It seems to me the loose reflector is making the globe move excessively. I think this in turn has contributed to the globe blowing due to severe knocking inside the housing, i.e. think sudden repeated hard impacts causing the globe filament to break.

My question is: can the light housing be taken apart and the reflector set back in place or do I need to buy a new light?

Checking out prices online suggest that i'd be paying $600 approx for a set of lights or $220-$330 per light. You can see I'm keen to know if the light reflector can be reset/repaired/refixed.

Here's an image that might be useful. Note the part that is sitting below the "light dome" it should be sitting flush. Click image for larger version

Other info that might be useful. I've just been told by a dealer that my engine mounts are on the way out, they noticed excessive vibration, I always thought it was the auto transmission working differently than the manuals we've had in the past. (Looking on this site there seems to be issues with the mounts, overly complicated perhaps??) I've had a 2" lift fitted 3 years ago that seems to me to be spongy and the front bar that I have mounted to the car has rubbed on the lights even though one side is 25mm and the problem side is 15 mm gap between bar and guard/light. I'm wondering if my body rubbers are buggered as well. We've done a few trips north to Darwin and around the NT the last few years so am not sure if the vibrations from hundreds of corrugations have perhaps started to take their toll.

In summary I guess I have two questions, 1: is the LH light repairable or do I need to buy another light housing. 2: Can anyone recommend a good suspension service mechanic. I am over taking it to different shops that bag products they don't sell. I'm looking for a competent suspension shop that can comprehensively service the front end in South Australia, preferably somewhere in Adelaide CBD or suburban is ok.

    Thanks in advance!!!

Thanks for offer, but I would like to know the cause of my reflector failure first before I put a new housing (if it can't be repaired) in.
      Cheers

Yes, the headlight can be disassembled if your brave... Welcome to the art of baking headlights! You see long ago in the land Honda Civics and Fart cannons, and cars made from rice with an indicator buried in the same housing as the headlight. One young chap figured he would get at least an extra 10KW if his indicators were no longer. But to remove the orange lens from inside?

He pulled at the front lens and snapped it
He yanked on the front and snapped it
He Donkey Konged the housing and smashed it.

        then

in great rice burning style he sat it on top of his engine to think.... then it happened. The magical heat of ball tearing 1.6L 4cylinders of VTEX fury kicked in and melted the glue holding the lens in place.

        Long story short...

Remove housing and all headlights and wiring from inside. Turn oven upto 100C throw it in oven and leave the door open partially. after 10 minutes. Come back and try prising them apart with your wifes spatula. When she hits you over the head with it. Grab butter knife. Besides, it stiffer. If no joy... put back in over and repeat process. Keep repeating until you have success. Use silicon to glue back together and make sure the bead is airtight so as not to fill up with condensation each morning

Or watch this clip... with said Honda VTAK unit.

My missus smacked me once (ok, more than once) for baking enamel painted engine parts in the oven. Couldn't get that paint smell out of the hot food for months.

@ RanJ, thanks for the hint. I would never have thought of that trick. The guy in the video worried me when he said 220, but then I figured he's American so it's probably in Farenheit (sp?) Might be worth a try.
Hopefully the smell isn't too bad. haha.

No, I've done it a number of times, the biggest problem smell wise is when you paint. You won't be painting....still, can't hurt to open the windows as the silicone/glue is not designed to be cooked so it can't be good for you lol

It worked for me at 70C. Still hot, but a little less dangerous and easier to handle.

sorry to bring up an old thread but i've popped the adjuster somehow in the process of plugging in the headlight bulb and the lense/ reflector is loose now. Any suggestions on how to repair without baking and opening? I can't quite see inside to see if its the ball that has popped out or other?

Also had a look at this but not terribly keen on drilling the casing.

                    Hi Col,

That's exactly what I did. The only solution I could find was to open the headlight and reattach the adjuster.

Mine has leaked ever since with condensation usually visible.

Take the light out. Hold it up on angles hoping to get it started again.
I have fixed a couple, but it can be time consuming.
Buy a new light or 2 off eBay will save lots of pain, rather than opening it up.

Thanks guys. ended up pulling apart and getting the adjuster back in again. should have put some glue or something on it though as kept popping out with the smallest pressure against it (putting the clip in for the globe).

                        Cheers
