  • Anderson Plug Location - 120 Series

    Hi all.

Have just come back from a 19,000k trip to Cape York and Arnhem Land. Three vehicles in the group had issues with Anderson plugs coming loose. My 120 series Prado, a 200 series Landcruiser and a Holden Jackaroo. Ended up replacing all three trailer/van plugs. All of us are looking to relocate the socket on the car to make it more secure. I have attached a spring with cable ties to hold the trailer plug in place and have taken the slack up with the trailer cable a bit by using a bungy to hold it in place.

The 120 series with their cast towbar is a bit restrictive for Anderson Plug mounting options. Is there a tried and proven bracket arrangement that could be recommended? Some photo's would be appreciated. Have mine mounted under a bracket housing the 7pin trailer socket beside the cast tow bar. Thinking about extending this bracket and angling it so the Anderson plug is separate from the 7 pin but at the same level.

    Any thoughts?

I would love to know also. We just bought a camper and I need to wire up a plug for it. Also what gauge wire. 8b&s?

I had fabricated up a mounting cover for the 50 amp Anderson plug out of stainless steel sheet metal. This I mounted under the bracket for the 7 pin trailer socket. Had one failure due to plugs disconnecting on freeway. After this I used some fine stainless wire rope to make a safety link that I then shackled to a hole already in the bracket. Those fitting where sourced from Whitworths Marine.
Since then these have become available, http://www.sidewinder.com.au/_wp_gen...8d30d17_0f.jpg and look quite good.
      Cheers

Under "Plugs and Sockets" in Products list.
Cable also available in dual flex double insulated with blue brake controller wire.
Can recommend this for trailer power run.
        Cheers Troy

I've never had a problem with the plug coming out. More of a problem unplugging it! Mines just screwed directly to the underneath of the bumper into the bit of sheet metal there on the other side of the hitch to the trailer plug.

So what actually failed? The Anderson plug connection to the vehicle or the plugs pulled apart? Are they genuine Anderson brand plugs?

Thanks Troy. Have seen those covers but are looking for a location rather than a cover. May end up using one of those later.

Thanks r4ndll. My bracket for the trailer hitch must go the other way. My Anderson plug is currently under this.

Hi mjrandom. Anderson plug on the vehicle ok just the plug plugs pulled apart. Happened on three vehicles at different times. Caused by a bit of dirt and grit in the fittings and not being able to push them home properly. Must have unplugged them at some stage and not been ale to push them home properly. Mine is under the 7 pin plug and a bit exposed. Wanting to move it up a bit.

Have tried both the Anderson brand and the look a likes over the years but both have been a problem. Mine was a look a like this time but the others were Anderson

I have my plug from my vehicle enclosed on a plug holder which is surface mounted with 4 nuts & bolts thru the side of my towbar. (Haymans reese). I haven't had an issue with the trailer plug falling out yet .

Hi Black moth I would run a minimum of 6B&S to a plug which I believe is around 10mm2. I have run 16mm2 to mine and don't get any voyage drop . The length of cable total from your aux battery under bonnet to battery if it at the back of you trailer will probably be about 9 metres so over that distance the smaller cable will give you a greater voltage drop

Foxclan and Whitey ..and others are on the money. Just did mine very recently to have the cranking battery on occasional charge in the garage. Used.
                            http://www.springers.com.au/product/...ual-Core-Cable (@6B&S???) and http://www.springers.com.au/images/P...445_image2.jpg

Redarc SBi12 will then charge the auxillary as well (under hood). Also use Leigh W's diode. Tubed it with: http://www.springers.com.au/images/P...arge/658_1.jpg
Stainless steel screws used in the sheet metal bit (passenger side) under bumper bar. (part of the OE tow hitch). When you drill, make the holes narrow so the screws really bite. All seems very secure and watertight.
