Last year my alternator failed at the start of our big trip. I don't know for how long it hadn't been working as I have 380w of solar permanently installed on the roof (like a mobile solar car port) which was keeping up with my electric consumption. I only noticed something was wrong one evening when the in dash battery volt meter wasn't showing the expected alternator voltage on a short drive with the lights on. During the day the mppt controller was outputting very similar voltage to the alternator, so I never noticed that something was wrong. I still drove it like that for another week while I sourced a new alternator. Solar has been a real game changer for our trips and camping.

I have fitted a 130 amp denso alternator to my 120. The belt screamed and could not figure why. The belts where in line as far as I could see. Idler bearings where replaced. After changing the belt it went quiet for a while then the screaming returned, and I mean loud enough for people in cars beside me would wind up their window. It started with a chirp, chirp then just scream.
Removed the alternator again and the air con, backing plate to find only the tensioner was worn. When replacing the alternator discovered the hole in the alternator for the main long bolt is oversize. This allowed the alternator to be just out of alignment and with the wear on the idler tensioner was the issue.
The fix. When tightening the main bolt centre the alternator on the bolt. Refit aircon idlers and belt. Noise completely gone.
Carry the old alternator in the trailer as a spare, along with belt and idlers.
