A chat to the guys at ARB (Regency Park) reveals that they are offering trays for both locations. The drivers side tray costs around a $100 more than the passenger side one, so more likely a commercial reason.
Incorrect. I spoke ARB Head Office in Kilsyth today. ARB only make 1 battery tray for the 120 series located as previously pictured on the passenger side.

Regency park will have a third party product hopefully without an ARB sticker on it... I'm sure head office would love to know about it.

On the brighter side, having 1 of each tray would mean 3 batteries are possible in the engine bay for those whom might want that set up.

NOT incorrect.... I didn't say it was an ARB tray, It is a third party part and ARB sell alot of third party parts...ie Engel/their own fridge slide or Thule/Rhino/their own roof racks as examples.

ARB Regency park is the SA state office (NT too I think).

        Mick.

BTW my battery tray was bought from ARB 3 years ago... it's not ARB branded either... (Behind the headlight).

Just to add a little to this, I was at ARB this afternoon just to prove myself right Just kidding, I was reallty there to pick up a Dtronic.

Anyway, I hit the sales guy with the question again (Dwaine something)

He told me ARB only make their own tray for the fire wall and have stopped producing the drivers side one. He said it was due to the cracking issue. He said thay only recommend their own product.

He said that if I really wanted one on the drivers side thay would of cause do it (Third party tray) but at my own risk only covering the tray not any cracking(won't turn away customers)

I then asked if they cover firewall/ wheel arch cracking damage if using the recommened ARB passenger tray, he said "if its proven to be caused by the tray or installation" God help you trying to prove that.

Seems you get a different opinion depending on who you talk too in ARB.

I then rang TJMs Nailsworth store. They told me they sell/use the Piranha tray and of cause "We've had no problems with it"

          All just food for thought.......

According to the brochure supplied to me by the dealer before I purchased the vehicle, my D4D has a 1KD-FTV engine. My engine no. starts with 1KD. Page 305 of the Owners Manual shows the 1KD-FTV engine with two batteries. The second one on the front drivers side.

Hence, wtf happened to our second battery, Mr Toyota?

It does suggest that a second battery could go in that clear space. If the inner guard area cracked after install of the second battery Mr Tojo dealer would be hard pressed to say it shouldn't be there when it is shown in the manual.

Does anyone know if it is supplied in overseas models and if unused wiring is already in place?

The Japanese domestic models have a 24V electrical system, so Dual batteries to support this. The 2nd battery is always behind the other headlight. My father has had a Japanese spec landcruiser 100, 90 series Prado and Lexus RX in Malaysia and they all had dual batteries installed behind the headlights.

Maybe we could order the Toyota mount for the 2nd battery from overseas????

If it was a factory fit, as in like it rolled out of the factory for a particular market, i would assume it to be a welded in tray, similar to our normal position battery. If you havnt looked, its a welded in stamped metal tray/ support.
Maybe thats the answer, never bolt a tray in, weld it allround.?.. Might strengthen it up a bit as well....

                Jeff.
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

                  Second Battery Location

I went to ARB and they advised that they install the secondary battery near the firewall to avoid the cracking issue. The limited space available by the firewall means that only a smaller battery will fit.

I am getting mine next week so I hope it doesn't affect the operation of the fridge too much.
