Re: Parking brake and ABS lights on

As I mentioned I thought it was to improve conductivity or to keep out the crap. If it is for conductivity then there is an excessive amount. This would have been there since day 1 and I do not believe that anything has changed. The problem I encountered started without coinciding with and service or mod to the vehicle so I am assuming that the white grease is cool and not the cause of the issue.

If at this point I was to assume that the problem is now resolved then all I can account this issue to was a loose connection but that would concern me since, while not difficult to access, is not the most readily available location to get to if this started causing an issue when out bush.

Since the pull apart yesterday morning the light has not been on after the ABS times out when the car is started. Here's hoping that continues.

Re: Parking brake and ABS lights on

Sorry Schaffer didnt realise you had left a question.

That grease stuff was all over mine as well. Like you thought, it is there to keep crap out and protect the connections. I would guess it is the non conductive type and just to seal and protect.
But with my experience with this stuff it seems to wash out or absorb water. Pretty crappy stuff i think.

Hope your problem goes away mate.

Re: Parking brake and ABS lights on

I thought I had solved it but still occurring. Took it into another Toyota Dealership here in Adelaide yesterday and they found a whole truck load of error codes (unlike the last place that I will nor return to). It' still covered under warranty so it's going in for surgery on Friday. Apparently it is something to do with the circuit that controls the ABS solenoid.

Hopefully the problem will be fixed on Friday.

Re: Parking brake and ABS lights on

Problem was fixed under warranty today. A shiny new ABS Actuator was installed. Glad Mr Toyota paid for this out of his warranty bag since the total cost was somewhere around the $5500 mark. When I was told the total price I nearly choked.

At least I didn't have to pay

Driving around this afternoon and the Park Brake and ABS lights came on again

Heading off on Tuesday to Broken Hill so the problem will continue for a while. When we return it will be straight back to Graham Cornes Toyota for further work. Who knows, if they replace enough parts eventually they will fix this problem

Re: Parking brake and ABS lights on

Had the car back in at the Dealers this week for them to have their fifth or sixth look at it. They had it about a fortnight ago for a couple of days. First tech looked at it and cleared everything from the ECU. Second guy, Super Tech with cape and red underpants came to look but ECU is all clean.

Back in this week and they looked and traced everything back to a faulty ABS Actuator. Fine but they only replaced this about a month ago. Glad I'm not paying for this but seriously considering extended warranty now.

Hi Schaffer- did you get this fixed? My VX has just done this - ABS /TRC/VSC lights all coming on intermittently and then staying on. At the same time it would not go out of P unless you held done the shift lock button. All the fuses OK and ABS relay OK. Was it the ABS actuator afterall? I off to the dealer tomorrow it would be great to steer them in the right direction! Oh at the same time the cruise control light started to flash - did that happen for you?

Nope, not fixed. Still stuffed. They have replaced the frigging actuator twice now. With a book value of $4500 and warranty of $2100 I'm glad it's their money they are burning. It HAD been booked in to go back today as they where sending a specialist across from either Melbourne or overseas to actually watch what they are doing. I doubt that will help at all and I'm actually getting pissed at the number of times I've had it in there and the actual cost I'm incurring now. Sort of feels like they have booked this guy to come over for training that my car will be used for...

From what you have described I think you have a different issue as the only evidence of an issue are the ABS and Park brake lights coming on With mine they will just flick on and stay on until the car is turned off. Sort of like it rechecks itself so it's an intermittent fault that completely disables the ABS. I don't have Traction Control (GXL) and for the life of me can't think of VSC at the moment. The gear shift (mine is an Auto) did not have any problems and the Cruise Control light comes on and off ONLY when I push the button. I have heard that it drops out if you go below 40kms an hour but I've never tested that.

Not sure if that helps but I think you have a different problem with your vehicle. Good luck

Re: Parking brake and ABS lights on

Maybe a different problem alright - mine has turned out to be the brake pedal switch. I picked up that there were no stop lights when the problem started and also noted a strange noise on depressing the brake pedal. Currently being replaced - I hope that they have replaced that bit for you as it would be a bit of a bugger if you have an intermittent fault in the brake switch giving you the warning lights and they have spent all that time and money on replacing the most expensive parts and not the simple ones!

In summary for anyone else out there here are the causes to look at for this problem:
                    1. Fuses and ABS Relays (simple and cheap)
                    2. Connections come apart or wet/dirty (real cheap, real simple and real hard to track down)
                    2. Brake pedal stop light switch (simple and not so cheap)
                    3. ABS actuator (really expensive and not real simple either!)

                    Cheers

Re: Parking brake and ABS lights on

The car went back on Wednesday to Friday this week for them to have another look in conjunction with a specialist flown in from Melbourne. After two and a half days it was still all pointing back to the actuator being on the blink. As this has already been replaced twice they are now having a guess that wiring between this and the lights/dash is damaged. Booked in for next Wednesday for an AutoElec to have a look over.

When I picked it up late Friday night I found my 4.3" GPS no longer working. It was working when I dropped it off. Pretty pissed about this but found it's just the cigarette adaptor that's shot and not the unit. I do have a couple of cigarette to USB adapterors for the same voltage but lower current that I will trial for a short while. Might look at mounting a number permanent USB slots in the car for various chargers (Nintendo DS, Phone, GPS, etc...)

Re: Parking brake and ABS lights on

Well, I've held off on commenting on this subject until I had some anwsers from Toyota. I've had the ABS light coming on and off for about the last 6 weeks, and the abs triggering on the front drivers wheel (FDW) at very low speeds eg. 20 - 30 kph. Been back and forth to Toyota over the last 4 weeks with Toyota having my car in their workshop for the last fornight.

They have apparently replaced the wiring to the ABS sensor, and ABS and speed sensor on the FDW, cleaned all the other ABS and speed sensors, tested and been able to capture the sensor misbehaving whilst the computer was attached. Mind you this all happens one component at a time and tested before they replace the next component in the chain.

Anyway to cut a long story short they have been speaking with Toyota Australia and apparently is has something to do with the inner bearing seal and the bearing. The seal breaks/leaks (which is not that common) and throws grease onto the bearing serface which apparently has a series of +tive and -tive magnets that communicate with the abs sensor. With what I have been told this is what causes the sensors to play up (or at least in my instance) causing the light to constantly come on/off.

In fairness to Toyota I did say to the service manager I didn't care how long they took aslong as they rectified the problem this time around, but I wasn't expecting 2 weeks without my car. But I would rather be without my car for a couple of weeks than something happening to the family because the brakes failed.

With a little bit of luck I am praying to have my car back early next week!!!!!!!!

Re: Parking brake and ABS lights on

My car has been back a couple of times since the last report. I think they may have actually fixed it. I've sort of become so used ot the light that you just don't notice it anymore and when it's been in the last two times they have had problems finding error codes. The last time it was in, with Belair Auto Elec, they were going to rewire the power supply into and out of the ABS system. I believe they did this BUT Tim could not find any errors prior to that. So for about two weeks now there appears to be no problems.

                          Lets hope it continues.

I've foolishly never tested the ABS. With this issue occurring I've had less interest in testing if it works while this has been an issue. Since I don't actually recall noticing the issue of late then I'll be giving it a go soon to see what happens. Not really sure if anyone has had the ABS operate with standard brakes since the standard are ordinary. Will get around to an upgrade one day but too much money to spend on other fun tools!

Nick, even with ordinary brakes, you just need to pull up hard on a low traction surface to see if the ABS is operating. Wet bitumen or gravel (or gravel over bitumen) would test out the ABS on even the weakest braking car.

                                Regards,
