    Re: Thumper Power Supply

When you guys are saying you're getting x amount of days out of your packs, is this until the batteries are dead or until you get to a certain voltage?

Crammy, I think the Thumper stops at 10.5v or something like that. I have the instruction sheet in the car, will report back tomorrow

You can pay retail for a Thumper, but you don't have to. They always seem to have factory seconds at decent discounts in the shop at Mt Barker or at the various shows. Mine had a little chip on the casing that was apparently worth $180

        Hey Michael,

10.5v is pretty much dead flat. Just be careful discharging down this far all the time as you'll be shortening the lifespan of your battery considerably. Try to keep it around 50% or approx 12.2v (open circuit, no loads on) maximum discharge for the best out of your thumper.

        Cheers,

Great work Deeptank - love the colour. I like the idea of a DIY Thumper, you can set it up with exactly the outputs you need and with a monster battery like that I've no doubt it would power far more than I would ever normally take away with me.

I'm wondering if it would have been possible to include the engle charger in the battery box? The charger could presumable run comfortably enough from the 12v outlet in the back of the car as it seems like the Engel charger is designed to run of a 10amp outlet? That would make it fully portable and easy to mave from car to car when the need arose.

            Hi Andy,

Last wekend my wife and I went to a rented cottage in Olinda for a couple of nights, so we didn't take any camping gear. In this case I just strap it down as per the pics. Again, by making my own battery box I was able to 'plan ahead' and leave a clearing on the cover to accommodate for the use of a tie-down ratchet strap the way I wanted.

When we go camping I slip my home made storage 'thingy' in the back and again use a tie-down ratchet strap. Never had a problem and it has never moved as much as one millimeter.

            And for camping...

              Hi Mayhem,

Heh, heh... yeah the colour... Well, truth be told, it was a colour sample I had kicking around. I figured I'd just slap that paint on to protect the timber/plywood and paint it grey or something later, but now the colour has kind of grown on me. Not everyone shares your enthusiam though... :-)

Sure, I could've put the Engel charger inside the box, but that would've made the box bigger and as you can see from the pics in my post above, I had to work to a pretty tight set of dimensions. Also, as the battery box already weighs over 30kg's I didn't really fancy the extra weight in there... Also, by having the Engel charger outside I can use it to charge other batteries I might be lugging around. Just a matter of preference. I wouldn't run it off the factory fitted outlet though--- I reckon too much of a current drop, plus it needs a third cable to operate it. Sure, you could just wire the third cable to the +ve one to have it activate as soon as it's plugged into an outlet, but not ideal for me in the scheme of things. I also like having that extra output free to use for other stuff. I also think (not 100%) that the rear outlet shares a fuse with the front outlet - but don't quote me on that... Either way, horses for courses... My other car is a VW Golf, so not much need to run a battery box there! :-)

                Re: Thumper Power Supply

Oh yeah, I set the low voltage cut off in my Waeco to the lowest level so as to protect from excessive discharge, but that's never kicked in. And I doubt it will unless I sit in one spot for about five+ days. Also another reason I went with a Waeco - lower power consumption than Engel equivalent. By quite a margin actually... But I don't want to start a 'fridge war' - been through enough of those already!!! ;-)

Last weekend I had the Waeco running for 48+ hours and loaded it up with warm beer, coke, water bottles etc. Didn't even bother to plug the battery to the charger and when we got home it was showing 12.4V. Can't complain about that!

That looks like a great little set up.

We have the Thumper battery in our camper. Its from the 12 volt shop from around adelaide. Top things.

Just purchased a 105Ah Thumper to go with our camper trailer as a portable battery system for our Waeco fridge and also to be used as our back-up system to the main CT set-up. With this and the CT, we should be pretty self-sufficient out bush for a while without any fear of losing power.

Thats for sure, Do you have it setup to charge whilst driving through an anderson plug? As that is the way to go, Then have a small battery charger to plug into when your at a campground. Way to go.

                        Re: Thumper Power Supply

Our Thumper battery worked a treat over the past month while traveling around Central Australia and Outback SA. It powered our Waeco fridge and also helped charge all our other accessories - leaving the camper trailer battery to just run its electrics. It was also handy being able to move this around depending on our set-up or requirements. Also used the solar panel array on a few occasions to boost its charge, especially during times of heavy draw (when all accessory outlets were attached and being used to charge up other items. Very happy with it. In fact, just getting a Waeco fridge cord adapted today by adding an anderson plug to make better use of the available outlets on the battery.

                          Re: Thumper Power Supply

I've just bought myself a Thumper 75A battery pack and got it installed into the back of the car. Great unit, easy to install and put together well.

My question is about the recharging system and whether I should be replacing it with something else. I need to point out that the charging system works fine. The Thumper charging system works by connecting the main battery to the Thumper via a simple Narva 4A relay which is switched to work only when the accessory power is on. Obviously this works, but compared to the RedArc dual battery isolator I also have installed in the car to charge the batteries in the Kimberly Kamper, it seems a little simple.

I'm wondering if this setup will work perfectly well or if I should actually replace the Thumper charging system with a second Redarc

                            Hey Mayhem.

A bit late but I thought I would pass on what I think of your setup.

I think the simple setup you have to top up your Thumper is fine. Redarcs from what I am aware of are heavy duty relays that can have cranking amps set through them. The thumper in the back of your car would only be for acc's and not used for starting duties. So the simple small relay used would be fine. If you got the jumper cable attachment with your thumper then thats what I would be using to crank with if needed. (Uses the big anderson plug on the thumper with heavy cable to the clamps)
If you were to us a redarc you would be better off running cranking size cable through the car otherwise the amps running through small wires would cook them.

                            Jeff.

Hi Jeff - its never too late to learn a little more. I had already installed it using the gear they provided but it all looked so simple I wasn't sure if I should be upgrading. I have to admit its working beautifully as it is - one day I'll learn to just leave things alone and stop trying to improve what already works just fine. I guess the KISS principal still applies. Thanks

                                Fellow Thumper owners,

My power leads (fridge etc) keep vibrating out of their cigarette lighter sockets on the Thumper, any quick and dirty solutions?
I was thinking of a simple elastic band but that seems a bit too easy. I have the Thumper in a small cage to protect the cables from moving gear while driving on corrugations.
