I did not want to bother running another wire and switch in to the cabin, and never got foglights fitted when I got the ARB bar, so decided to try and use the redundant foglight "on off" switch on the steering column stalk to turn on and off the driving lights instead. I didn't want to fiddle with the original vehicle wiring too much either. The simplest way was to use the switched voltage that normally powers the foglights to drive a relay . Those relay contacts then act like the switch you would normally have.
It works great and I'm quite happy with this because I can turn the spotties off and on using the same switch stalk as all the other lights. No need to reach down below the dash and fiddle around for the switch. Also you get a light on the instrument panel ( formerly the foglight indicator ) to tell you the spotties are active.
They still turn on and off with hi beam as normal ( and required by law ).
I will fit some 100mm spotlights in the holes for the foglights and then can wire these in to the same hot line as the other driving lights.

Oh BTW I found that the Hi Beam active terminal on the headlight socket ( referring to MickL's diagram) was the top horizontal one not the RH side vertical one ( as measured with a voltmeter )

Green denotes orginal vehicle wiring, black is new wiring.
Does any one have a copy of this diagram lying around? Wanna install my spottier this way

    Thanks in advance

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but for those using it to find out which lead to use, It appears that it depends on the model.

I finally got around to making my wiring legal. I've got an 08 GXL. It appears to be wired with switch to earth. That meant like others, connecting the low beam wire (the middle one) and works correct to trigger the driving light relay.

You get a 12 v signal from this wire when low beam is off as its not shorted to earth.

You will have to use trial and error (and a multi-meter) on this one.

I know this is an old discussion but is the wiring on the prado headlights different to other vehicles. From the diagram common or earth fit to relay no. 86 where previously I fitted it to relay 85 and positive from switch opposite. Not sure if it relay matter as its only engergizing to open the main switch between 30/87.

                Installing driving lights

Own a prado 2005 grande model and attempting to install a set of driving lights
Using your diagram but cannot get lights to work. Do you have to have an earth wire on the relay. I am using an illuminated switch to control the lights
                Thanks

And a copy of the wiring diagram for the Carling style rocker switches (if anyone chooses to use one)....

And my drawing of the NewPro-Tech style switch, with modification drawing for connecting to the IPF loom...

Hope that helps anyone looking for some information...

                Cheers Matt

Yes, ground is pin 85 on the relay.

Thanks. However looking at mick's diagram for H 4 globes Pin 85 has a wire going to the switch

Pin 85 on the relay is always to GND. It will not work if it isn't grounded. Perhaps it went to the switch which then went to ground. I can't see the diagram you are referring to where pin 85 goes to a switch.

So it doesn't matter if 85 or 86 is +ve or Grd? As long as 1 is +ve and 1 is Grd, the direction doesn't matter?

the only time it matters is if the relay has an internal diode.
then pin 85 must go to ground.
