Finally got around to adjusting the headlights on my 120.
Parked about 1 metre away from a wall, marked the line where the headlights illuminated and adjusted clockwise the upper 8mm screws quite a number of times to get any downward adjustment.
Moved car back about 4 metres to gauge where the cut-off point was and made both headlights as even as possible(look at both headlights, then squat down).
I used a 8mm socket on the LH headlight and a 8mm ratchet ring spanner on the RH headlight (battery tray very close).

Hi PP Folks,
I have read through this thread as I need to adjust my drivers side headlight upwards (using the top screw as shown in the pics posted). I have used the bottom screw to adjust the left/right position with no probs. It would appear that the top screw mechanism does nothing at all on my Prado. I understand you have to turn it quite a few times for any movement, I fear the mechanism behind it is broken or something not lined up.
Does any one know of any more detailed info about how the headlight adjustment mechanism works and how to fix it?
If I compare the left and right headlights I can see the good one (passenger side) has the internal reflector aligned pretty well inside the headlight assembly, the one I need to adjust is quite a bit out of alignment - is there any other way of fixing this? I was unsure of how to remove the headlight covering to check and did not want to break it - thought I would ask through PP first.
Any tips or instructions would be GREATLY appreciated!

Sounds like something is broken in the headlight assembly.
You will probably have to take the headlight out to see what the problem is

Hi MidLifeCrisis, I will take some pics to show you what I mean when I get off work. It looks like I will have to remove the light from the vehicle and somehow check the insides of the headlight assembly, something is not right with the inner workings of the adjustment mechanism.
Would anyone know if:
Is it pretty easy to remove the headlight?
Any gotchas with doing this?
Failing a fix it will be a visit to flea bay for decent replacement (there is usually some dodgy parts among those listed), I would assume Toyota would charge an arm and a leg for a new one.

I had to melt the seals in the oven to open the sealed assembly. I had over wound the adjuster screw which had come completely off the mount. The headlamp had then gone floppy.

I think I used 80 degrees. Sealed it back together again, but 18 months later its showing condensation after a river crossing. - Just my experience.

Thanks Corigator, sounds like that may be the case for me as your description fits my situation. I will have a crack at it when I get some time where I do not need the Prado for a day or so to drive.

Hopefully this comes out ok, but you should be able to see that the inside reflector is not sitting properly within the light assembly.

how do i level my headlights?

currently I have one headlight that is lower than the other, and I am looking to adjust them. Any ideas how adjust the level of these lights?

I have the standard halogen lights that come on a 120 series. Not sure where to start

Any help would be appreciated (pictures or video would be even better).

The adjusting screws are near the top of the headlight.
I found that an 8mm ratchet ring spanner (available from Bunnings) is the best tool to use.
Need to park about 2 meters from a wall or garage door, mark the top edge of where the lights show on the wall, then adjust the screw on each headlight.
It will require a number of turns to make a difference, the ratchet makes this much easier.

My way:
Important tips. 100% flat surface is required.
Drive up to wall & mark.
Reverse back 3-4 metres further is ok as long as you can Clearly see the level of the light.
Passenger side from should be adjusted to the mark, so it is level -NO HIGHER.
Driver side should be dropped 50mm is down to help prevent blinding others.

Remember it's just as Important not to be too high as much as not too low, you don't want to blind a poor driver & end up in a head on.

Yes 8mm adjusters, one takes it up & down the other side to to side.
