Re: Redarc BCDC-1220 20amp DC-DC 3 Stage Battery Charger Install

Is it possiable to use the redarc as a 240v battery charger as well? as in we you get home and you want to recharge the battery of mains power? instead of buying a 240v charger and the redarc car DC-DC charger?

I can't see how it would the spec sheet from the Redarc site says Input 9-32V DC.

No, definetely not. Its a 12V DC booster designed for under bonnet installation only.

How hard to hook a 240v-12v inverter to the Redarc when near 240v to recharge battery to 100%? Seems like a big outlay $400 for 12v redarc dc-dc +$210 for 240v ctek + $300 for new battery just run a fridge. BTW i already have dual battery set up with a TJM battery isolator, model with the link button. Just my 2nd looks like it's dead and need to replace it.

Yes it s possible to use a 240Vac / 12Vdc power supply to power the BDDC from a 240V supply. But you are going to need a power supply that is rated at 25-20Amps continuous duty. A quality switch mode (transformer type will be too big and heavy) power supply with this rating is difficult to find and not cheap. You would be better off buying a battery charger as it offers more flexibility.

This is 5 products in one....
              240volt 15amp charger
              15amp DC-DC charger
              Solar regulator
Battery management system with LCD display..
              Batery isolator

I have this unit fitted to my camper trailer.... and the bcdc 1220 fitted to my prado..

OK, I'm old enough to no longer be too proud to ask stupid questions from smart folks who have already installed something and have it working.

So, Rod01 has reported back how well it is operating, I just wanted to confirm which connections that should be made when connecting this baby up.

Note my interpretations are in brackets after each wire.

From the manual the wiring is listed as:
                  - Orange - Battery type configuration wire (depends on battery type - Positive for Calcium, Ground for Lead Acid and not connected for AGM? )
                  - Red - Battery Input Positive (from the positive side of the primary battery through a 30A fuse)
                  - Black - Common ground negative (can be grounded anywhere?)
                  - Brown - Battery Output Positive (to the Aux battery through a 25A fuse)
                  - Blue - Ignition Voltage Sense (any circuit which is switched on by the ignition?)

                  Is the above correct?

What would be an appropriate circuit for the ignition voltage sense?

                  Any other tips?

                  Cheers OGG

                    Hey OldGreyGuy,

I have added my thoughs in place of yours here below.. just a couple of changes....
I am just at Bald Hills if you would like to have a look sometime... or need some help.....

                    - Orange - Battery type configuration wire (depends on battery type - Positive for Calcium, Ground for Lead Acid and not connected for AGM - Correct )
                    - Red - Battery Input Positive (from the Alternator B+ Terminal through a 30A fuse, this puts the load directly on the alternator)
                    - Black - Common ground negative (I would earth it at the earth point just where the battery tray mounts or onto the aux battery, which will in turn be earthed as well)
                    - Brown - Battery Output Positive (to the Aux battery through a 25A fuse - Correct)
                    - Blue - Ignition Voltage Sense (I connected in to the Aircon sensor, in front of the radiator)

                    Hope this helps

                      Thanks Rod.

Does anyone have an opinion on the gauge of wire for this wire, should I just match the wires that RedArc have used or because the wire is coming around the engine bay should I use a heavier gauge of wire to avoid some of the voltage drop?

                      Cheers

I used 6mm wire (the same as the redarc unit).
or you could step up to 8mm.. if you are going to solder...
6mm is easier as it will fit into the yellow crimp connections..

                          Rod,

Thanks for the tip, I found that I had two sets of plugs up at the aircon sensor, one was taped up and not being used and the other was connected to the air-conditioning, I used one of the unused plugs and checked to see if it had voltage when the ignition was on, it did only when the ignition was in the on position and was independent of the air-conditioning controls. All went well and now works a treat.

                          Cheers OGG

                              Rod,

Yes it is all working, I hooked it up and it works it's way through boost, absorption and float and then shuts down when the ignition is off.

I put a Supercharge Allrounder into the rig, a number of folks here seem to use them and give them good reports.

                              Thanks for all your assistance.

So there is no need to have big heavy jumper lead size leads to use this redarc unit? I've got a normal dual battery isolator at the moment with all the big cables joining the two batteries and isolator but looking to up grade to the redarc. I've just installed a new 105 amp AGM and looking to get the best out of it. Bought a C-Tek 7 amp charger to look after it when near 240v
                                Cheers
