On a little shopping trip to Jaycar this week I came across some cheap HID kits. I couldn’t help myself and buy a couple to convert my LF170’s with.
A little late night research and I found this site, which has a very good write up of doing a conversion using non genuine kits:
http://www.expeditionportal.com/foru...ad.php?t=11347
The Jaycar kit is rated at 35w with a 6000K globe (same as the genuine LF conversion kit)
Output is around 3300 lumen (VS approx 1500 for a 100watt halogen globe)
They also claim a quick start of 20% output @ 1 second and 80% @ 4 seconds.
The price?... $139.90 the pair ($69.95 each kit)
As the bulk of the conversion in covered in the above link (which is a very good write up BTW) I’ll keep mine brief;
The units come branded as Digitech which is Jaycars own branding. They come reasonably well packaged, and at this price are obviously made in China.
First step is to remove and strip down your lights.
There are three rivets that need drilling out, one in the side the holds the heat sink in, and two in the front that hold the globe holder in.
Once you have everything out it looks like this
The heat sink has some casting the needs to be removed, the H3 HID’s are a perfect fit in the ID of the heat sink, so basically you only need to remove the material at the bottom. I did this with a Dremel and small rotary burr bit.
Next you have to mark out the holder (see above link) and drill and tap for the retaining screws. I went 4mm stainless counter sunk socket head cap screws, mainly because this is what I already had laying around, In the end the counter sunk head worked out very well. They hold the globe in tight without any undue stress on the base. I used a small drop of Loctite Screw locker on each one.
The finished unit ready for the lens to go back on
The wiring is very simple and been covered many times before so I won’t go there.
Some testing around the back streets and in the driveway shows a great improvement. Unfortunately my pics didn’t work out. I’ll get some up as soon as I can find a dark back road somewhere to get some decent shots.
