Re: LED'ing the prado and wiring the Rear Fog Lights

The other half didn't really like the rear tail light designs and thought that it made the Prado look ugly - all bulbous she said! So as a favour I got some LED Lexus GX470 LED lights from the US (in a time when the Oz dollar was at 98c mind you) and fitted these for some extra bling. Everyone is happy now. Also added bumber bar rear stop tail lights (not LED) a standard stop tail globe in a standard fitting - took the wiring direct from the towbar socket so I didnt have to fiddle with the main lights - works a treat.
    [/img]
I had the same problem with my bullbar light globes for parkers and indicators blowing all the time. The wiring to the lightglobes is very thin maybe only 1amp or perhaps less! So instead of doing a major fix/refit - I upgraded the wiring to 10amp - soldered all the wire connections that go inside the lights and then replaced the standard globes with LED globes. That means from the outside everything looks standard - it just has better internals. So far so good!

              Howdy McBain!

Bloody new job has taken me from everything I like doing! Like enjoying life... still it pays the bills, I guess...

Hoping this year that I can take time out to reacquaint myself with the kids and with the Prado.

Happy new year to you, mate!

Guy's I've come by some small amber marker LED lights as below.

I was thinking about putting in some side marker lights on the Prado just above the running boards but below the doors. Do you guys think there will be issues with the law if I do this??

l don't think so as long as you stick with the right colors. From memory there are specific rules for running lights.

those lights are good, been using them on the ARB bar as park and indicator lights.

Re: LED'ing the prado and wiring the Rear Fog Lights

Yep ok thanks McBain. The DPI (Dept for Planning and Infrastructure) website for us here in WA doesn't say anything in particular about marker lights. Although they say that "additional lighting" is ok, but that can mean a whole range of different stuff. The addition of spotlights etc. I've emailed the DPI about the issue but they say a reply can be 10 days or more in coming back as they are very busy. I had thought that the addition of side marker or running lights may be dependent on the overall length of the vehicle, which is why you always see them on trucks and large trailers etc. As far as I know, marker lights should be amber or "yellow".

Found the below Vehicle Standards 2002. Can't find a mention of side marker lights being illegal on smaller vehicles. Just the situations when you do need them. So my guess is we are correct, if the colour is correct and the light is less than 7 watts you'd be ok. Unless the standards have been updated since 2002.

                    http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/w...g/rtsr2002308/

ROAD TRAFFIC (VEHICLE STANDARDS) RULES 2002 - REG 90
90 . Performance of side marker lights

                    (1) When on, a side marker light fitted to a vehicle must —

                    (a) show a light visible 200 m from the vehicle; and

                    (b) not use over 7 watts power.

                    (2) When on, a side marker light fitted to a vehicle must show —

                    (a) to the front of the vehicle — a yellow light; and

                    (b) to the rear of the vehicle —

                    (i) if the light also operates as a rear light or reflector — a red light; and

(ii) in any other case — a red or yellow light.

                    (3) However, if a pole-type trailer with 2 or more cross-bars or bolsters has the side marker lights permitted by rule 88(3) —

                    (a) the side marker lights fitted to the front cross-bar or bolster may comply with subrule (2)(a) only; and

                    (b) the side marker lights fitted to the back cross-bar or bolster may comply with subrule (2)(b) only.

Well anyhow, I fitted one side marker each side today anyway. I used a very sticky double sided foam tape to attach them in case I have to pull them off again. Pics coming soon. These LED's are fairly bright too and look to be very well made. The entire light is encased in resin, electronic board and all. Looks like they'll cop a beating 8) . Looks a bit strange with just one light per side though..... might have to add some others. Wiring them was interesting I can tell you.

These are great lights..... I got mine from brightlights.
I have replaced all the running lights on my camper with them, (white clearance to the front and Yellow / red on the sides)
                      Very happy with the result.

Re: LED'ing the prado and wiring the Rear Fog Lights

Ok so here's the marker lights I've fitted so far. You can see that for the moment I've only stuck the lights there with an uber sticky foam tape. Before I drill that plastic panel I need to decide if I've positioned them correctly and also If I really like em there or not.

For now I've just put one LED each side. But this looks odd. I think the addition of another one each side will set things off nicely. For the moment they come on with the park lights and are then obviously on with the headlights at night.

Heres how I routed the wiring, up through the chassis. This is directly underneath where the light is mounted. I used some reticulation pipe, of all things, to feed up through the chassis. After some mucking around I got the retic pipe to come out up near the rear. Attach wiring to the end of it and pull back, bringing my wiring through!

Coming out near the back. That's the exhaust you can see disappearing up into the bowels of the beast. I wired them into the rear trailer plug park lights. Simply turned the park lights on and set to work with my multimeter to find which pins were powered when the park lights were on. Rather than cut the correct wire and feed power off that, I pulled the plug apart and attached my take off wires into that. I really didn't want to make a mess of the existing wiring back there. Also, I can pull it all out again if required and you'd never know I'd done anything back there.

Up close and personal. You can see the wiring disappearing over the top of the plastic panel which looks a bit messy. The light actually pops out of that black surround, which you can then screw down to the surface you decide to attach them to. LED's come with the screws you'll need. As I said though, just taped there for now.

All my night shots are crapola. Mr Canon still has our better camera. This is the best of them though.....

Actually, I got the LED's from Auto One in Balcatta. Auto One is a distributor for these LED's, which are made by LED Technologies Pty Ltd. Although Auto One didn't have the full range of these lights in stock at the time. Think I bought all their amber ones too.......

                            http://ledautolamps.com/

You can also get them from Brightlights as Signature035 said

                            http://www.brightlightautoparts.com/BLTLRL.html

Just looking at the 2002 Vehicle Standards I think we could also use the Amber front / Red Rear lamps as well. I'm wating for a reply from the DPI though on the final verdict.

Strangely, the Auto One price was very comparable to the Brightlights price...... Go figure. Gotta have a little bling in your life. Not Gangsta levels but enough to make ends meet.......
