Every HID driving light I have seen does this, to a greater or lesser extent

            • When they are first turned on they have a short bright burst, and then they dim a bit and warm up from there. I havent timed them but at a guess from cold they would take 20-30seconds to get to their brightest.
And when fully warmed you can stand about a metre or more away and get an isolated tan.. yep..you can still feel the heat off them from well over a metre away.

              • Hid upgrade again

I`m a new user and have missed a lot of the light discussions, I have a 120 series with standard toyota alloy bar, the local shop suggested that rallye 4000`s wouldn`t fit real nice and tried selling me light force lights which i`m not interested in, can you tell me if the 4000`s will fit and if they`re a pain, I`m just worried about the recess in the bar. Has anyone fitted those bosch hi/lo hid upgrade kits that are everywhere on e-bay, they also offer a h3 kit as well, has anyone had any experience with these.
                cheers

                • Rallye 4000's do fit, but need a flat plate spacer to bring them forward slightly to miss the bonnet when lifted.

There is a few threads on the different HID kits and fitting them already, do a search for HID. Spots and headlights have been covered as well as the legalities.

                  • I have been reading a few posts about upgrading to HID lighting...

I am wondering though, do the HID's produce more or less heat than Halogen globes. If they are hotter, how does the polycarbonate headlamp cope with it?

I found the 38Watt HID Lamps ran far cooler than the IPF 130Watt Halogen Lamps when I tested them in my IPF 800DSCS Reflectors for a 6 hour bench test prior to modification of the Steel housings and final installation.
My digital thermometer battery was flat so I only used the Mark One Digit to test the temperature difference between the HID and Halogen, noting I only left the halogen lamp on for 15 minutes before the reflector housing and lens was hot the touch.

                      Hope this helps a bit

                      • Brought some H1 HID kits off Ebay and decided to put them in the Hella 4000's today.

It was not as hard as I thought. 8)

Take retaining ring off the front & pull out the lens.

The remove wires from lens and push out plastic pug at rear of light.

No need for this bit any more.

This part of the kit without the ballast. I cut the red joiners off and pulled the wires (blue and black) back out of the rubber grommet.

Was then just a simple matter of pushing the wires though the hole where the old wires entered the light and pushing the rubber rubber grommet into place.

It fits fairly well but I may also use some silicone to make a better seal.

Then its just put the lights back together, I put some Loctite on the screws that secure the locking ring as I have had the vibrate loose before.

Now I just need the Sahara bar to turn up then I can fit them

In the mean time I decided that I had to find a way to try them out.
So after much head scratching I came up with, using the Thumper battery pack and hooking up the loom that I uninstalled from the 90, a couple of connectors and we were away.

They well and truly light up the back yard , neighbors yard  , house 10 houses away    & all of the trees I could find to point the light at.

May even pack it all in the car and go try them on and empty stretch of road.

                        • Hi all,
just after some advice from any auto electricians or someone with experience on HID light conversions.
I bought a 55watt conversion kit off fleabay last week for my IPF900XS spotties, same kit as Jacto I believe and did the conversion on the weekend. Did the spread one first and had to extend the wires by 500mm so I could mount the ballasts on the cross rail under the radiator (I only have a nudgebar). Turned the lights on, all good so I moved on to the pencil beam. Once again I extended the wires and hooked em up but when I turned the lights on I got a short buzzing crackling sound
but no light from the pencil beam. Flicked between high and low a few times, both beams came on, flicked again, only spread beam.Went for a drive to get some beer in the arvo and stopped beside the road to see if they both were working but only one was on and the crackling sound was continual. HINT: Don't pull the leads apart whilst the lights are on ops: On investigation the next morning I found that the heatshrink around one of the joins I soldered had shorted through. Out with the insulation tape and wrapped it up, bingo both on again but then the missus took off to work so I didn't get to test them again until this morning when a brief check showed they were both working but coming home tonight they both were initially working but soon as I had to dim, only one came up again. Flicked several times they both came on,dim again, only one back. Had a quick check standing in the open door, I noticed a short buzzing sound when I flicked onto high beam that only lasted maybe a second or two, but I couldn't get both going again.
What I would like to know is could I have damaged the ballast with the short or could the ballast have been faulty at the beginning :?:
Keen to now your thoughts before I contact the seller with a warranty claim.
One thing I can say with certainty is OMG they are bloody bright.
Funnily enough, the missus hasn't commented on them yet.
                          Thanks in advance.
                          Dobbo

                          • You do realise these things run at about 23+ KV??

Unless you use the correct silicon cable you are going to be burning your car pretty quickly. You will find that the noise is the power arcing thru tape or other joins.
