    Re: 12v Wiring Help

Does anyone know if the inside of the little side pockets on each side of the rear come out? I have gotten the bottom bit out, but cant seem to get the rest to unclip (if it does unclip and come out)

I've had them out before. From memory just gently pulled them. May have been a screw in top.

After taking them out, you can then take the bottom plates off the rear door and feed a bit of stiff wire through up to the pocket void, use that as a pull for your 12V cable. Saves having to pull the whole side panel off.

When I did this for a friend's car we mounted the 12V socket in the pocket. It helps to stop the plugs getting knocked.
      Cheers, Wayne

        Thanks Wayne,

So the inside of the 'pocket void' does come out?

I'm planning on mounting two distribution boxes inside the side panel and would make it a heap easier if I can get the pocket void out of the side panel.

i didn't think the top section of pocket did come out.
i also mounted a surface mount socket in pocket, and a flush mount socket just behind the pocket.
the flush mount plug when inserted/used does get bumped and so have stopped using it. use surface mount all the time

Yes I might have mis-lead there. Apologies.
I was today running some wires for a brake controller and had to remove the pocket.
Only the bottom "tray" part comes out - the sides and top of the pocket are part of the side panel moulding.

However, taking the tray out should give him enough access to mount sockets.
            Cheers, Wayne

Does anyone know why I can't get a 12v reading from either of my 2 batteries? I've just installed a red centa dual battery system running to a piranah fuse box, but I can't get a volt reading at the batteries, the fuse box or the 2sockets I installed. The main battery still starts the car and all accessories anthe 2nd seems to be holding a charge. HELP.......

Are you able to provide a wiring diagram mate so we can see how it is that you have connected the system together? Is your multimeter working correctly? As you have implied that you are not getting a volt reading at both batteries and yet the cranking battery is still able to start the car and all the accessories still work... ????

What system are you using to connect the batteries in parallel, solenoid or other?
Batteries are connected positive to positive and negative goes to body earth? Do you have adequate earth connection?
What cable sizes are you using for the system?

But a drawing & pictures would give us alot more info to help diagnose the problem...

EDIT: The more i read and re-read your description - the more i think that either your multimeter is faulty, the leads are in the wrong sockets, or its on the wrong setting??? Maybe set to AC instead of DC???

That would be my guess as well. Could even be set to reading reistance o_O. Might not be working now though

One the note of connecting the multimeter to a circuit, just as a follow up to Nick's info, if the unit has been applied to a circuit even for a short duration with the wrong setting selected it can fry the internals in a "dead-short" across the components, some multimeters contain internal fuses to help protect and others do not. So before using a multimeter always check it against a KNOWN voltage reference, such as a battery and confirm that the multimeter reads true and correct. Then perform the required test on the electrical circuit. And as a secondary, it is also good practice to recheck the multimeter afterwards, also against a known voltage reference.

Thanks guys, just tested the meter against a battery with no reading. Checked both sockets again with a 12v light, one worked, one didn't. Looks like a dodgy meter and socket. I'll change the socket next weekend and see how I go. Hopefully all will be ok and there'll be no more questions.
