Well, the car isn't ready this week at all as I got a phone call yesterday to say that they haven't started on it yet and it might be early next week.
      What have I done wrong???
I feel that if I go in there and blow my top then I'll only get half a good car back and not get a good job done on it; which is of course what I want.
But I am getting so frustrated. It is now over 8 weeks and they DO have the parts. Well, that's what they have said.

This all started on 10 March and I AM DRIVING ROUND IN A BL...DY COROLLA that they lent me. GEEEEESsss

Got the car back today after $7078 and a few cents and have the offending piston to see the part of the glow plug embedded in the top of it. As a result of all this I have 4 new pistons and rings and bearings, of course; 4 new glow plugs and tips to injectors; all belts changed including timing belt; radiator checked and cleaned and the list goes on for 3 pages.

Now to get some k's on it so that we can get back to traveling and camping and our trip to drive to Darwin next month. Our camper trailer weighs just over 1 tonne so we need some k's on it before pulling that on a long trip.

Many thanks to all those people who responded to my original post and especially to 'tassie tiger' who picked what was wrong with the engine before Toyota even picked what it was.

Hi Brian. Did your Prado have extreme Km's on it? Why would the Toyota dealer consider it necessary to recondition total engine? I fail to see why they didn't just recondition the injectors, replace the offending piston/rings and reassemble. Did you ask them to go for the doctor and do what is needed? Did they offer you alternative options? Why I ask is were they looking after your best interests or theirs. I guess you will be keeping the old girl for a while now. After she's run in could you give us some feedback on whether you are happy with result or you would do things differently given your 'Druthers. Cheers Boss.

The car had 133,000km on it and when Toyota dismantled the engine to find what was wrong with it, they wouldn't guarantee the repairs unless all was replaced. They did not want to just replace one piston once they had taken the head off and taken the 4th piston (the one it was) out without replacing the lot. Only when they phoned me and said no guarantee unless total replacement then they would offer a 1 year on parts and life time on workmanship. It took some bargaining to get 1 year cos I was told only 6 months on some parts at the start. They sent the crankshaft, head and injectors away for checking by some outside agencies. I don't know who they used but that was $1500 of the price. The crankshaft and head were fine but they have changed the tips of the injectors at $200.
I collected the car at about 10am today and spent the afternoon putting about 220km on the clock and I will go out again tomorrow.
I will try and put up a couple of pix of the top of the piston that was damaged as I asked for it.

Geez, that glow plug really did bounce around a bit. Welded itself in nice and good in the end too.
I can understand the whole replace it all to get the full warranty, if it were my business, I'd do the same.
Good job on negotiating the 12month warranty too, gotta feel good about that.

Hopefully, you get a good run from here on in.

Thank you for sharing your adventure with us.

After 6 days we have 1200km on the clock so the car is going in for an oil change and check of the filter as suggested by lots of members above. Everything seems to be running well and no oil use nor metal particles that I can see from the dip stick when checked each morning before starting. And the new glow plugs start it instantly. All good.

No valves were changed that I know of. The head was sent away for checking and found to be in perfect condition; That's what I was told anyway.

I think if I had any sort of trouble that was similar to what happened; I don't think I would go back to Toyota again; the car is out of warranty so I would probably take it to a diesel specialist like Diesel Australia. Just my thought...

Didn't toyota give you 12months on the rebuilt engine? If anything goes wrong, take it straight back to the,, god knows, you paid for it...
