When parked on a hill my truck rolls even though it is in gear (1st) once the hand brake is released. I would of thought the compression of the engine would hold it but it doesn't. I have tried this facing up and down hill in 1st and reverse and it rolls every time. Is this normal or does it suggest a problem?

Hey Matty. You will find it is not so much the engine compression issue but gearing. Modern vehicles tend to have a much taller 1st and reverse than the older vehicles and so using the "park in gear" system isnt a good idea unless you use low box.
