Not nice mine was the same oil flush complete inlet system removed and cleaned, intercooler drained, injectors replaced and re-coded, also a coolant flush.. All up cost me around $1800 as I did all of it myself didn't even dare ask toyota for a quote plus there warranty is nothing compared to baileys diesel..

It was'nt too bad make sure you have plenty of room (bench room) to lay out the parts, there's plenty of help from online guides.. Got one from baileys diesel, the inlet manifold was pretty tricky to remove, also watch out for the vacuum lines make sure you remember where they go, and there's a couple of hidden ones, I would allocate 2-3 days in go steady and complete cleaning for the job, any problems by all means give me a shout.. I work FIFO as a heavy diesel mechanic so doing this was too bad as I had a full week to fit in the job I case things went wrong..
Thks Ian, have already gone with SWR's recommendation, thanks anyway.
Just drain your oil and take the sump off.. There's 10 10mm bolt heads and then pry off.. Very easy job for anybody who can service there own cars just get the grey sealant
Thought I'd update for any who are in a similar situation.....My engine failure and subsequent rebuild that was going to cost $2k? well, I received a call from the dealer who said that TMCA had reconsidered my case and were going to do the work for free. He could (would?) not give me a reason, only to say the case had been reconsidered by TMCA. I have since had the work done at no cost and was told at the 1000km service that inspecting the screen with a camera is now a standard part of every D4D service! not sure of the truth in this but to me this is a good as finally admitting to the problem. This was with Busselton Toyota who originally told me to-Quote"Not bother with an out of warranty claim as they had another D4D blow up recently and it cost that guy $13K, so I should just pay"! It's well worth fighting this with the Perth based district service manager for your region. WIN!
Would there be a fellow Prado owner in Perth willing to lend me their camera for a day or two so I can have a look in mine? I would be most grateful and obviously if I hurt it in anyway I would pay for it.
Cheers
You can get a camera that you plug into your laptop (usb) from Jaycar for $50. Works well.
44, I did the sump on my 150, it's not hard, drain oil, take off the stone cover then remove the sump bolts / nuts, then carefully use something to split the silicone like seal that connects the sump to the bottom end. I used a large metal paint scraper, but go slow/ be careful. Once off it's easy to remove the pick up and clean replace. Remember to scrape off the old seal as best as possible and get some permatex black to create a new seal before you put it back.
Took me a few hours but someone with skills would be quicker !
honestly I wouldn't bother unless you are really worried or can see lots of chunks.
I've just been quoted by ultra tune and Toyota 14 and 15 hours respectively to have the oil sump pickup screen replaced, they are both adamant there has to be 2 sumps removed for this. How in the hell can this be right?
Is there anyone in Perth who can do this properly because if you chaps can do it in 2, how they can quote 15 hours is beyond me. Apart from a misunderstanding or simply trying to drive up labour costs...
Help appreciated.
I only just bought this 150 and want to check its health, and replace the screen while I'm at it.
Cheers
If there's any diesel specialists I'd be happy to give them the business opposed to generic monkeys.
I have removed the steel part of the sump, cleaned the pickup and re installed in about a hour.
Easy job for anyone with some ability. Obviously these guys have none.

Ozzie, I don't think you need to replace the screen, at worst you need to clean it out with solvent once removed from the car. The hours that you have been quoted are way above what is required. It should be the same as an oil change +2 hours at the worst. I did it myself at home and it was straight forward although you need to be careful levering off the sump. This would be significantly easier on a hoist.
I'd suggest that an oil change and visual inspection through the sump port with the mark1 Eyeball and torch will give you a good idea if you need to go further. It's really very obvious if you can see the mesh filter or if it's clogged with black gunk.
Yeah, I called allied turbo and diesels in Wangara and they laughed at 15 hours. Their recommendation is to replace the injectors (of course).
What's NOR?
Yeah, new to Perth, up Ellenbrook way (Air Force), I got quoted just under $1k for a injector feedback test, figured might as well just replace them if it costs that much.
I left it facing downhill overnight and started it up, no smoke which is good but it's still rattley when cold. I'm sure it's still got its factory injectors. All I have is the handbook which has been stamped up till now (it's getting the 150,000km) service done right now. All I wanted was to check the god damn pickup screen to see if it's got crud in there.
I'd be happy to pay someone for their time (or share some beers / scotch) and learn how to do it. If you guys can drop the sump and replace it in 2 hours then I should be able to as well. Just need to learn how.
Amazing how it's gone from a general inspection to 4 new injectors.
Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with this Prado, but I just want to make sure I'm not on a ticking time bomb.
