I recently noticed black smoke from the exhaust on a cold start, I've taken it to Toyota and 4 days later they has discovered that one of the injectors isn't working properly. I brought an extended warranty when I got the car and it's still in warranty. Toyota Extra Care want them to check the fuel tanks to see if there is algie in the tanks. They reckon it's most likely dirty fuel which has caused the problem, they say that because then it's not covered under warranty (AR#$$*&&#). Anyway they gave the car back to me and told me to bring it back when the tanks were low so it would be easier to take the tanks out and take photos of the tank to check for algie. They quoted me $11,000 to fix it. Got to be joking please.

If the tanks are full of algae and it has got through to the injectors, shouldn't the filter be full of it too? Much easier just to cut open a filter.

can some one set me straight are the injectors failing because the seals are leaking and damaging the injectors in the process or are the leaking seals a different issue to injectors going out of range and falling and if a leaking seal is repaired early enough does it save the injector from damage as mine has just started the cold rattles at 135kms and im wondering if im up for new injectors and seals or just seals
        Cheers

At 112,000 and nearly 5 years I am having a new set of injectors put in. Been suffering from the chaff-cutter noise and blowing smoke during warm-up, but only since the weather got colder.

              Ok
              145000
4 new injectors, latest DLC blue top type.
              New zinc seals

When the reflash was done the injectors were reading fine except for number 1 which was +3.0
3 months later the rattle was worse than ever.
All seals were leaking with 1 and 4 being the worst with some bad build up.
After programming the new injectors in they were reading
              0.4
              0.4
              1.0
              0.4

Cost was $2250 plus $250 labour.

Initial Problem, black smoke on cold start.

Just got the car back from toyota, the car is under extended factory warranty (the car is 5 1/2 years old but within the extended factory warrany period) they say it's dirty fuel, they pulled out the tanks and checked the fuel pod, yes it was dirty. Now that's its fuel which has caused the problem toyota extra care wont cover it. Toyota have had my car for about 8 hours, testing and pulling it apart and they didn't charge me a $ for all that work. Why is that? They then gave me a quote to fix the problem of $12,000. replacing injectors and everything associated.

Well the lesson there is if I get injector issues I will flush.my tank before going to Toyota.

But what a crock, that's why they car has filters. So are Toyota admitting their filter system didn't work?

Yeah, I had the car at Toyota and they told me it was a fuel algie issue, they gave the car back to me as it was full of fuel. I took it to my mechanic to clean the tanks out. The KNOBS didn't clean the fuel pod, twhich sits inside the tank and is the main part which pumps the fuel. Boy was I pissed. paid $$ for them to do the clean work and they missed a vital part. And yes they will be getting a visit from me.

So now I'm putting through a insurance claim with my car insurance. Apparently this type of issue is claimable. ABout to find out. Otherwise I'll be asking if anyone knows any good diesel mechanic in Melbourne.

Fair to say my current local Mech wont be getting the job.

Couple of shots of the fuel pod.

Basically if you have injector problems, go to the source dont just fix the problem.

My mechanic friend says that the filter in the non-serviceable Prado under-bonnet filter should be replaced every 20,000km? Any thoughts on this? He also advises the installation of a second filter such as Racor or Fuel Miser.

Having read this thread I'm a bit confused, is there a simple way to tell which version of injectors are installed or is the only way to remove the injectors? (My injectors are noticeably nosier than a mate with the same car and mileage.)
