  • Reserve fuel

Have done a search but nothing seems to come up so maybe someone may know.
What does the reserve tank hold once the fuel light comes on?
I always thought it was 10 litres but it seems like more even though the fuel needle points right on E

    LES,
    What model are we talking?
With the D4D the dash indicates 90 litres left but I doubt that, I can say however the last of the fuel disappears very quickly.
At a guess I would say you would be lucky to have 80 litres left :?: :?: :?: :?:
Not a good idea to run a diesel out of fuel ops:

      Les,
I re-read you post after making some sort of feeble answer.
Sorry but I have not been that game as yet to run it that low, but on one occasion has taken 164 litres with the gauge showing just under 1/4 left (which would mean only 16 litres left) :?:

Probably no help at all

        low fuel light

        hi

i've tested the accurracy of my fuel gauge recently.
i ran the tank until the orange low fuel light come on , then filled the tank in 20 litre increments. This is my result

Orange "low fuel" light on and green "90l" light on, there is 25ltr remaining.
The needle on 1/2 with green "90l" on, 40ltr remain.
The point where the needle is on 1/2 (green light off) the bounces to full with the green light then switching on (i.e when switches from main to reserve tank) occurs with 92 ltrs remaining

my conclusion was that the fuel gauge in my VX D4D was very accurate.
i believe knowing how accurrate your fuel gauge is, thus how much fuel is remaining, is important when you're planning fuel stops and usage etc.

I know most drivers would never let their fuel run so low as there low fuel light would come on, so they would never know how accurate their fuel guage is.

i would recommend people to test their fuel gauge but make sure you do it near a servo. Also if your vehicle is older, do just before a scheduled fuel filter change, in case you suck some dirt and crap from the bottom of your tank.

sorry, i need to correct my last post.
it should read when the orange light comes on there is 15 ltrs remaining and when the needle is on 1/4, 25 ltrs remaining.

            bernie,
you have got me thinking (hard to do sometimes) I got down to under 1/4 of the remaining fuel, no low warning light & only 16 litres left.
Problem;- which order do the tanks fill or is it a bit of both.
When they empty I believer they go from sub to main but what happens when they fill.
Just food for thought as you may have an incorrect assessment when refilling  :?:
May be better to just refill when the low warning light comes on & take the total off 180 litre suggested full capacity :?:

Your assessment may be right with yours, but mine???

              Bernie,
How about that both posting at the same time.
That makes more sense to me now

Well I have been through the owners manual and I can not see a reference to how much is left in the tank when the light comes on.
I suppose I will just have to run it to the light then fill up and see.
I hope someone has already done this though.

                BTW I have a 2003 GXL 3 litre auto with a 180 litre capacity

Whilst I havent measured quite as precisely myself, I think bernie is pretty well on the money with his results. However, I think that the first tank actually holds a little more. Although they say 2 x90ltr tanks, I have a feeling the 1st tank may be 92 and the 2nd 88lts. Not sure, but I always get more K's from the 1st tank. Does anyone else find this also?

25ltrs when the low fuel warning comes on is about right. It still allows reasonable range to get to a servo, epsecially with the kind of consumption the D4D's are getting.

                    Mark,
yes you get a lot more ks, out of the first tank. I don,t know about them both being 90 lt tanks, just crawl underneath the lot a lot different in size to me??

My Prado certainly does not have 25lts left when the low warning light comes on (it hasn,t come on yet & that is with only 16lts left :?: ) Maybe it was just about to come on as Bernie,s second posting suggest???

Never did like trusting gauges anyway

Will try at a later date when I am at a safer distance from a servo & not on the Hume hwy.

                    Cheers,

Tanks are different sizes, totalling approx 180 litres (I have filled when surging once and got 182 into it!!).

When my light comes on I know I have got about 50-100 kms left before total runout (checked).

I have run my Prado for about 100km after the light has come on, so 20ltr would be about right.

Also when I fill the Prado up as soon as the light comes on the amount of fuel short from the 180ltr is about 20ltr. I'm guessing so that you don't run it dry Toyota try to panic you so you fill it up straight away.

I was under the belief that the transfer is taking place the entire time? From the info sheet that I have read from the toyota manuals and also on here?
It uses a Jet venturi pump (has been posted here before) to constantly transfer fuel so it does not encounter stale fuel ever from draining one tank first.

I found the following using the search button.... fuel transfer in the topic to search for..
