The reason for this is in the way the fuel system works. You don't have two seperate tanks that are switched between (like the 90 series).

The second tank should be thought of as an "extension"to the main tank

The system works by taking fuel from the main tank and pumping it to the injection pump or fuel rail (depending on engine type)

The return line from the engine goes through a "Jet pump" which is the sub tank. (more fuel is pumped than used by the engine for lubrication and cooling the injection system etc)

The jet pump pumps fuel to the main tank and tops it up.

A jet pump uses no moving parts. Think of it as a funnel with a high pressue jet firing into the middle of it. The pump is submerged in the fuel tank. The pressure stream draws in surrounding fuel into a lower pressure, higher volume stream.

So.... to pump fuel out of the second tank you are in fact using an amount of fuel from the main one to make the jet pump work.

Mick.....nice to know that once in your previous life you were a micron and spent time in a fuel tank system to know how it works. Funny huh?!?!?!

There are definitely some leadfoots out there. Mine is 07-8 D4D 3ltr etc, no modifications, 180ltr tank. I fill up in Adelaide, drive to Mt Buller and back with some mucking arout around Mansfield - distance as recorded on last trip - 1950KM with low fuel light on but still moving - I make that 9.5 / 100, we don't dawdle, sit on 100 - 110 kph.

Fisher...true.. I regularly return around 8.5 to 10.5 depending on traffic etc on the way to work. it helps living in the hills (the top of them!). On the way home, generally about 12 to 13 depending on traffic and how good or bad a day i have had.

really - i think we are talking about 5% of nothing...a litre or 2 per 100km is nothing to get excited about - not is the relevation about using some fancy additive whIich may or may not return a better consumption or we may have the luck of no red lights etc....... That fact is, we drive these cars for a reason. Full stop. I like to drive it Mon to Fri to work and back and then (when i have a chance) to take the camper or the ski boat for some w'end fun. Or even the truck for some hill, dune or swamp (not there's much swamp in Adelaide at tho momoent but hopefullly that may change) bashin........so all-in-all, until someone releases technology that makes 9-13 litres/100km seem bad........and a nerw truck can be bought for $10k (global crisis yardy yar...enuf said)

            • Fuel economy TDi

Hi all, I have a question about fuel economy in the 3.0l TDi. I would like to know what sort of fuel consumption I might get towing a CT (approx 1300kg) on dirt roads (no sand dunes).
I guess what i am asking is what are you all getting with a similar towing weight on dirt roads. I am planning a trip from Windorah (Qld) to Tiboobrrra via Diamantina Lakes NP and haddon Corner. All up about 1250k's. This would be ok if not towing, but , with a 1300kg CT in tow I am not sure how many extra litres of diesel I need to carry. Any help would be appreciated.

I have just towed a 1250kg camper from Brissy to Alice Springs and I averaged between 15 and 16 litres per 100km. This was on tar but I would not expect there to be too much difference between tar and good dirt road. This was with a D4D engine.

Really interesting what milage people are getting, good to see that we all drive differently. Just ask my partner.

                  Prado - Dune - 2008

                  Engine - Diesel 3.0Lt

                  Transmission - 4 speed auto

                  Tyres - Standard Treks

Wind influence - Standard Toyota roof racks, Alloy Bullbar, Surfboards on roof, Storage unit and Fridge.

Average over 17 tanks is (9.97 Kpl) 10lt per 100 K's with all driving. Around 24,000 Kilometers, no towing yet. Over the moon.

I found the run along the beach from Timms Thicket to Myalup pulled it down a bit, full load of food, drinks and recovery gear, storage unit and 3 people and hanging in second gear. Had a ball though.
Have found that I am getting slightly more out of the first tank, around the 1000k's, usually run it up to near on 1400K's before I fill up.
Must fill it then to see what litres are in the first tank. Supposed to be 90 I thought.

Best machine I have ever owned...well will be one day if I can keep the bank off it....

It's been a while since I updated my fuel consumption but the following is based over the last 26 tanks of fuel since October 2008.

                    Prado - Dune - 2007

                    Engine - Diesel 3.0Lt

                    Transmission - 6 speed manual

                    Tyres - Cooper ATR

Wind influence - Standard Toyota roof rails with two cross bars & Toyota Bullbar.

Average over 26 tanks is 9.97 litres per 100 K's.

Variation from a minimum of 8.48 to a maximum of 11.14 lt/100 km.

I suspect a large part of the variation is factors such as using airconditioner and the type of driving.
I haven't done specific testing but believe best economy is cruising in 6th gear at around 2100 rpm. (about 100 kmh) To get 110 kmh its about 2350 rpm.
One day I might get a fuel flow meter and find out for sure where the best economy/speed cruise is.
I also expect the upper level is for those times I'm towing a trailer when I cut wood and it's a combination of off road dirt and hills plus a 1.5 tonne trailer.

It's excellent for a vehicle of this size and weight.

                      Hi guys,

My D4D economy figures are probably similar to others. Here is what I've found:
best has been 8.8ltrs/100kms Rton to Townsville at 105kms per hour average on cruise control),
around town is around the 11ltrs/100kms
However towing the Coromal 600 van (approx 2 tonne loaded), the econony shoots up to around 15 - 16ltrs/100kms. Mind you, I'm not travelling slow - averaging between 90-100kms per hour and 110km on the 110kms per hour sections. It's the grunt that is truely impressive, especially when compared to our previous 2003 GXL T/D model or a Nissan Patrol T/D. Not going to complain about the mileage - for a big, capable 4X4, it's more fuel efficient than a Commodore and towing capability is in a difference league!

thats good news, we are seriously thinking of getting a 20' caravan behind the Prado and if thats the type of fuel I can expect to use then Im wrapped. The speed is excellent. Will have to look at it closer now.

Just did a run to Geraldton and was wrapped with the fuel useage, only 2 people in her and no load.

sat on 115kph with the cruise control with burst to 140 to pass and she purred like a dream.

did notice a slight sluggishness at take off but soon got used to that and pushed the loud pedal harder is all.

managed to get 10.12 km per litre on the run so Im excited.

                            That's pretty good.

We just got back from Falls Creek. On the way over, started with full tank of BP Ultimate. 902kms to Mt Beauty where we topped up with alpine Diesel: Exactly 90.2L = 10L/100km. Prado (Lift and Bar) was laden with 4 adults and luggage, ski gear, food/wine for a week on the mountain.

Haven't refuelled yet, not sure of the return economy but by the fuel gauge it's about the same, probably a bit less as it is Alpine Diesel and includes the run up and down the mountain in lower gears.

You must have had a lot of grog if the back-end was sagging and you were not towing a trailer. I can load mine right up to the gunnels with all sorts of gear, including bags of concrete, and the back will not droop. It only comes down when I'm towing hence the poly air bags in the rear.
