  • Re: FUEL CONSUMPTION

    Hi Guys

Just a word of warning about running your engines out of fuel. Last time I did this it led to some dramas due to crap getting sucked up from the bottom of the tank. Long story short, I needed a new fuel filter and a reset of the ECU to clear the fault code that had caused "limp home mode". Luckily no damage done to the fuel pump. This was with a 1KZ-TE 90 series. I would be petrified about running a D4D out of fuel given the sensitivity of their common rail fuel delivery system. Be carefull!

I last refuelled my car in Wiluna on 1st October, 2009. Yesterday, 25th November, the yellow warning light cam on for a little bit. I refuelled and she took 166 litres.

2 and a half months to empty ain't bad. Mind you, I don't have to travel too far to work (one set of lights and three roundabouts). Unfortunately scanguage won't tell me what the average consumption is over that period but I figure it's just a bit over 9l/100km.

Yea, thats my thoughts, neither my wife or I are lead footed. Filled up last weekend with BP ultimate and will run that for a while. Next service not due till Jan but I am keeping a running tally of all the fill ups.

        I'm afraid the economy is getting no better. Here's the l/100 that I have got out of it so far, 11.9, 13.9, 11.7, 14.3, 13.6, 12.3, 14.6, 14.6.

Armed with this information at the 6th month service they could find nothing wrong. All he told me to do was keep an eye on the tyre pressures.

This seems to be significantly higher consumption than other members on this forum are getting from their D4D.

My last fill was mainly around town.

        Any thoughts.

Grant - I have similar specs - main difference is I have BFG's AT's,a snorkel and a DEPK chip installed (I usually switch this off when driving around town adds about .5litre per 100kms) - but I have progressively added these over the year - my consumption has progressively increased - did you have all the accessories added at the time of purchase? Just taken the V8 t/dsl troopy to Wingellina and back.

Lucky to scrape a little over 400km per tank (90l). Thankfully, the govt foots the bill.

            $2.05 per litre at Warburton.

I'd still be pressing the dealer to assist you sorting this issue out as your consumption is to high for your set up.

As a comparison my 1kz gets consistent low 11's in general mixed driving, to get into the 12's I need to load the roof rack up or run off road, to get into the 14's I'd be fully loaded and towing our camper.

I run 70 series muddies, lift, steel bar and winch, drawers, roof rack plus all the other liitle crap that we attach to our Prados, everyday weight of 2400kg.

I would have expected mid 10's for the same set up with a D4D.

                Thanks guys,

I got most of the accessories fitted in the first month of buying it so I did not get a real indication of what I should be getting. I expected an increase in consumption, but not this much.

I don't really want to wait for the next 6 month service so I will be pestering them again, they might even have a decent look if this is the only reason that I am taking it to them.

are you guys dividing total KMs travelled by total litres used?

if you are, i have been getting a figure of 7.95L/100km including the % needed for the larger tyres. highest is normally about 9.8L, but a lot of the times its around 8.5L for town/city.

am i not figuring this out correctly? i thought the consumption figure is never lower than that stated on the yellow/red windscreen sticker.

                  i a bit confused.

                    Hi,

                    To calculate l/100km

divide litres used by kilometres travelled then multiply by 100.

                    l/100 =(litres used / km travelled) x 100

                    cheers

That calculation will give you Km per litre , and the one Grant gave LPK.

                        Hi Guys

2007 D4D auto VX 1KDFTV engine nearly all bitumen, 36 km to and from work each day to the CBD, 460km most weekends usually pulling a fairly light trailer at 100km/hr. No bullbar or roof rack just 2 roof bars. Standard Grantreks. Usually 2 adults and 2 kids on the weekend and a heap of gear in the back such that oncoming traffic often thought my low beam washigh beam - poly air bags fixed that.

my average over 69,000 km is 11.96 litres/100km. Worst was one tank at just over 13. The weekend highwat trips average just under 10l/100.

I'm happy with these figures but wonder if they would be better if what I believe is a faulty injector was fixed. Long story here that I've also seen elsewhere on this site. In summary its the cold weather engine knock issue that disappears by the time you get it to the dealer because the engine is warm. They don't believe you of course and when pressed their answer is to leave it overnight so they can start it cold. I will do this if I have to before the warranty runs out. Mind you despite them saying repeatedly that they can find nothing wrong the noise is considerably less for a week or more after each service.

Hi all. Recently (10 days ago!) became the owner of an 08 Standard, D4D diesel engine, 6-speed manual. We have already put nearly 2000km on it, and are loving it to bits. One of the main things I was keen to measure was the fuel economy - we changed up from a Subi Forester (2 litre) which was very economical. So, topped up and reset the trip meter, then topped up again to do the maths. Went through that cycle twice now, and I'm absolutely delighted. Over the first 900km or so it returned 8.8 l/100km, and over the last 1100km or so it was even better - 8.5l/100km. I do drive it very gently, and this was nearly all on the bitumen, and not towing anything, so that's about as good as it can get. But I reckon that's sensational for a 2-tonne vehicle in constant 4-wheel drive. It's only a hair more than the Forester used to burn. I'm a happy traveller! At that rate I could do over 2000km on a tankful! Tyres are Bridgestone Dueller A/Ts, at about 38psi all round.

Often towing an Ultimate camper-trailer.

Got mine onto a closed track and noted that at 140km/hr it was around the high 23l/100km and at 160 she peaked at 24.9l/100km.

I was a bit dissappointed that it didn't want to go any faster!!!

                                Hi,
I have just picked up a 2003 120 4 speed diesel. Consumption has been, around town between 15 and 18 l/100. I got 11.5 from a HJ60 and I get 6.5 from a Focus TDCi now. Not the driving style. I have 172,000 km on the Prado. Apart from servicing the injectors, what esle can be done? I note that there is no Air Flow Meter on these models. What is overfueling and what causes it?
I plan on going away with rthe caravan for a few months and that kind of consumption is not good.
                                Thanks
                                Bill
