buzz you have to remember the wieght you are pulling and throughing around...does it have a lift? Bigger Tires? Roof Rack? Dual Wheel Carrier? All these make a difference. I know mine got worse from the lift, bigger tires, and the roof rack for sure. injectors might be an issues and at 172K on the clock it might be needing to go in on the Dyno to see what is up?

      Hi,
I have been reading past posts claiming 11 to 12l per/100km. Most are D4D but surely the earlier 120's are not that bad in comparison. Mine has no lift, its bog standard. Normal roof racks that have been on since factory. Its a standard Prado GXL. New filters all round, Edge oil, transmission service, Cooper tyres on their last legs. I have been running Chem-Tech for the last two rhousand kms and the last consumption test went down from 18 to 15l/100. Maybe the injectors are cleaning up.?
What else can be done for a diesel - petrol motors have a tune up option. We only have one diesel injector business in Gosford otherwise it is Newcastle.
But will gummy injectors affect the consumption?

I'd be very carefull running any sort of fuel conditioner or cleaner with a D4D, common rail are very temperamental. I'd take it to either 1. a diesel mech or 2. Toyota dealer. Something must be up, even doing a day of slow hard work in sand resulted in ~14L\100km with extra bits hanging off the car etc ...

          Hi Ookami,
Thanks for your input and thoughts. I don't have a D4D; mine is the first of the 120's. Consulted a few people re the Chemtech and they seem to think it won't do any harm.
Yes, I need to get the old girl checked out. Will get the injectors looked at first and see what they show up. Not keen on going to the Toyota 'Stealer'. Most Genuine Service departments rub their hands together when a problem walks in the door.
I will ask for a recommendation from the Injector guy, if he thinks it needs further work.

              D4D 6 speed manual

roof rack full of spare spare, tent and odds and sods. 40 litres of water onboard bunch of red wine and a few coldies for me, Oh yeah some food and other similar stuff

              30% city 60% open road (110 K/Hr by the speedo) & 10% sandy tracks/beaches

Average over last three tanks = 11.4 l/100K

Would not mind if I could get better figures but the power of the D4D is very acceptable.

Will a chip make any real improvement to the fuel economy as I reckon it's the roof rack that's doing all the damage?

              Thanks

l get around 800km before the second tank kicks in then only getting around 500km before second tank hitting near empty.

If I get 600 kms on the front tank of my Petrol, I am doing friggin cart wheels !!!!
yeah but most diesels will get up to 1300 on around 170 litres lam getting 1000 on 170 so lost 300 a fill sounds a lot for a diesel

I have just picked up a 2003 120 4 speed diesel. Consumption has been, around town between 15 and 18 l/100. I got 11.5 from a HJ60 and I get 6.5 from a Focus TDCi now. Not the driving style. I have 172,000 km on the Prado. Apart from servicing the injectors, what esle can be done? I note that there is no Air Flow Meter on these models. What is overfueling and what causes it?
I plan on going away with rthe caravan for a few months and that kind of consumption is not good.
                          Thanks

Buzz you may want a good diesel mechanic to have a look at it cause that is terrible to give you a comparison i have the same motor and gearbox in a 2005 120 GXL with lift and about 200kg of acessories bolted on and i seem to get around high 12's to low 13's per 100km around town on the highway with just me an no gear i can get this down to high 11's but this is only on 100kph higways i find consumption at 110 goes back up to around 13 as it is revving to high (this is where the 5 speed comes up trumps) and even towing a 1.3 tonne camper never seem to go above 16.
My prado has 145,000 on the clock serviced every 5000k and the only other thing i do is chuck a bottle of injector clean in once in a while, i do use caltex vortex diesel and i get about another 100k range however it foams less so i may be just getting extra range cause i am stuffing more in.

Another idea to check is your gearbox once you have exhausted engine possibilities cause if the tourqe converter is not locking up your engine will rev higher to give you come comparison i will give you speeds and rpm if you are not getting the same assuming you still have stock tyres it may be worth checking into

                          60kph 1500rpm
                          90kph 2000rpm
                          118kph 2500rpm

You can tell if it is locking upo when you hit about 85kph you will see the revs drop it feels like you have hit an overdrive gear or something
Dont list all ya mods, you will only be more upset when i get further

City Ks only lots of stop start, 1171 Kms 146 litres diesel = 12.5 l/km. I expect I will get better than that on the open road but it will do for the moment
