You could try turning the chip adjustment back a notch and rechecking your figures. It is always tempting to drive the vehicle harder because of the increased performance. You have to train yourself to only use as much throttle as you need to acheive your desired speed.

When I purchased the car I was getting around 10ltr to 100klm but now its around 14ltr to 100klm!

My driving style is about mid range, not too heavy on the right foot, not to light. Upon each fill I do half city driving and half hwy with a bit of low range 4x4 somewhere in the mix.

Does this sound about right considering the mods I have?

10.3 l/100k mostly highway driving.
Just back from nearly 5000km towing 2t off road van, mosltly highways, around 100kph - 14.63 l/100k

G'day Tei, I have a manual also (08 GXL) with tojo alloy bar, snorkel, 265 65 17 BFG AT's lightforce driving lights, duel battries and my work gear in the back. Weighs in at around 2.5,2.6 tonnes depends on fuel etc was avg around 11.5l/100km mostly hwy. I changed oil to mobil 1 delvac 5w40 (synthetic) from 15w40 delvac (mineral) at 100,000km service and is around 10.5 to 11l/100km also mostly hwy. I don't drive like a granny either!

Hi to all,

Did a trip to Flinders rangers last week from Yarra Valley, just thought i'd pass on the fuel report.

2003 Prado 3ltr 120, Manual, Toyota Bar, Roof Rack, 2" Lift, Dual Battery, Fridge, Camping Gear, Kelly TSR 265/75/R16 on Steel Rims with 2 people.

From Launching Place to Mildura to Wilpena - 1200kms used 158ltrs running at 2500rpm or about 105kmph, Tyres @ 44psi
From Wilpena to Mildura to Launching Place - 1248kms used 169ltrs running at 2500rpm or about 105kmph, Tyres @ 40psi

Just did a 549k round trip Darwin to Daly river+back.........52.26ltrs.........9.5ltrs to the hundred.........cruise control at 120kph...........2500rpm...... for most of the trip sometimes faster overtaking..........running 225 yokies @40psi all round.......I acctually drove it fairly hard to get a real world fuel usage........After getting out of a V8 4.7l GXL 04 model Cruiser.........I'm loving it!

Just got back from a trip down to Thredbo and back (from Brisbane), and happy to say that I averaged pretty much 10-11 L/100k.

Running 2in lift....with ST Maxx tyres, ARB bar.

I drive the Prado fairly gently around town most of the time, but the lead foot does come out once in a while.

Engine : 1KD-FTV (2009 D4D 120 series)
Trans : 6sp manual
Tyre size: 265/65/17 (Grandtreks)
- ARB commercial Bar

Avg fuel consumption : 9.74l//100km.
Avg fuel cost per Km : 0.14c

These averages were recorded on 20,000km, with about 80-90% driving around town.

I've recently bought my fathers stock 2007 120GXL D4D auto. He reckons he used to do about 8.5L/100km... not sure how he was doing it. I think I'm only doing about 10L/100km. I've now got it booked in for early June for some ARB goodies to be thrown at it, so I can't imagine I'll ever see sub-10L/100km ever again. I used to do about 10.5L/100km in my previous 2007 Hilux D4D 5spd SR5 dual cab with deluxe bar and 150kg of other crap. Heaps better than the BA XR8 utes that I had in the past - geez, I should've bought shares in Shell!!

I've read a lot of the threads to do with fuel consumption with a D4 D diesel Prados.
My second hand 2007 Prado GX auto with upgrade pack is using much more fuel than most other posts I've read.
Since purchase at the end of last year it has averaged 13.5 L/100
I had it checked last week and the diesel injector specialists here say that it is producing really good power but on the dyno it shows a fairly big drop in power at the wheels.
They put the heavy fuel use down to the tyres (Goodyear Wranglers LT 265/70R - these were on the car when I bought it.)
I've noticed many of the threads show users getting really good consumption with tyres of a similar size so I think there is probably another issue.
I've replaced the fuel filter and have just upped tyre pressures to 38psi from 35psi.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to do next?

Take a look at your gearbox.
The auto's are usually very resilient from Toyota but if it hasn't been serviced properly it will be robbing you of power and increasing fuel consumption.

I would like to apologise in advance for the nerdy answer, but it may give you some info!

I also have a 2007 GXL D4D and when I bought it, it had the 265/65/17 Grandtreks on it, an alloy bar and a UHF antenna.
I was averaging 10.3-10.7

Now, I have dual batteries, spotlights, bigger tyres (Cooper AT3 265/70/17 pumped at about 38-43PSI) snorkel and roofracks.
I'm getting 11.1-11.5

I've also calculated, that with the bigger tyres, I'm covering 5% more ground then the car thinks as 105kmh used to be 100kmh and now 105kmh is 105kmh, therefore if you take 5% from my fuel figures, I'm actually doing 10.5-10.9 which means that the tyres and other weight and wind drags I've put on the car only really account for a .2L/100km in consumption difference (which I'm very happy with)

So if you're getting 13.5 there's something quite wrong with it! Have you tried seeing if your fuel tank or fuel hoses are leaking?
We had a truck here at work that was drinking 25L/100km, then had a look under the bonnet and one of the blokes had stuck a rag in the oil filler as he lost the lid and wanted to keep the oil from bursting out, and after removing that, the economy went to 18L/100km. Maybe there's some crap in your oil tank?
