  • On the highway I generally use 40psi and get around 10l/100km. Pressure may be a small part of the issue?

I would like to apologise in advance for the nerdy answer, but it may give you some info!

I also have a 2007 GXL D4D and when I bought it, it had the 265/65/17 Grandtreks on it, an alloy bar and a UHF antenna.
      I was averaging 10.3-10.7

Now, I have dual batteries, spotlights, bigger tyres (Cooper AT3 265/70/17 pumped at about 38-43PSI) snorkel and roofracks.
      I'm getting 11.1-11.5

I've also calculated, that with the bigger tyres, I'm covering 5% more ground then the car thinks as 105kmh used to be 100kmh and now 105kmh is 105kmh, therefore if you take 5% from my fuel figures, I'm actually doing 10.5-10.9 which means that the tyres and other weight and wind drags I've put on the car only really account for a .2L/100km in consumption difference (which I'm very happy with)

So if you're getting 13.5 there's something quite wrong with it! Have you tried seeing if your fuel tank or fuel hoses are leaking?
We had a truck here at work that was drinking 25L/100km, then had a look under the bonnet and one of the blokes had stuck a rag in the oil filler as he lost the lid and wanted to keep the oil from bursting out, and after removing that, the economy went to 18L/100km. Maybe there's some crap in your oil tank?

      Hope the above helps!
      Hi

This is a late reply and a thank you to the guys who answered my post about fuel consumption.

I have been following up with the suggestions. I've increased tyre pressures, crawled under it to check for leaks, taken it to the dealer I bought it from to check the gearbox is changing correctly and at their suggestion taken it back again to have a cold start injector test done - that test show the injectors were within specs.

The workshop supervisor who drove the vehicle thinks also that the problem is the larger tyres - I'm still unconvinced about that.

I'm having it serviced next week (110 000km) at my usual workshop so I'll talk to them about it also. It would be good to find a magical cure as we are about to drive to the east coast and correct fuel consumption would make a huge difference to the fuel bill.

      Cheers

      • Gidday, 14 lt/100 is way off the mark for normal running. I averaged so far on my trip 14-15 l/100 towing 2,3 tonne caravan and I have roof rack, cooper at3 tyres, dual batteries, snorkel , bull Bar spotties etc so there is something wrong with your vehicle.

        • Well, happy camper here.

Picked up my 2nd hand 2008 D4D 120 from Sydney on the weekend and drove it back to Brisbane in one day.
2" lift, BFG AT's, Bullbar and dual batteries.

Read-out on the dash said average fuel usage per 100k's was 8.6lt
I'll wait to see what an actual fill calculation comes out like but initially I'm happy... especially after my 90 series petrol with all the kit on it averaged 18.3l/100 general driving.
          Cheers, Leon

          • well well well its funny reading these old stories considering I have been out of town ( away from pradopoint ) for a few years now , anyway there are so many factors reagdring fuel comsunption on the D4D engine , its morally comes down to the quality of fuel ( add power up does a amazing job ) the injectors , roof rack etc for you guys information I have a 90 series with a D4D fitted goes like a rocket and returns on average city driving of 9.8 lityres per 100 ks and country driving with 2 ton camper trailer average 9.2 litres per 100 ks ! with a D4D fitted to the 5 speed gearbox and 31 in tyres it gives a great acceralation 0 to 100 ks in 8.2 secs ! no Wonder why I have a Grin ear to ear !!

            • 9.2 litres per 100km with a camper trailer attached: I'd like to see that. Your driving style would suggest that you wouldn't even get close to 16s.

                • Have recently completed the annual 5250km round trip Kal-Pilbara-Kimberly-Pilbara-Gascoyne-Kal. 100km/h on the bitumen, lots of slow dirt roads with ++dips, sand, beach etc. 2007 GXL D4D with Dueller AT 695s, pod, awning, maxtrax on roof, 2 adults 2 children towing 1250kg camper. 14l/100km average.

Did exactly the same trip last year in 2006 GXL 4.0l V6 petrol with the same gear. Wind profile and weight would have been identical. 19l/100km average.

Interesting back of fag packet equation. If you buy a fairly standard 2008 GXL D4D with ~100-150,000km privately, you'll pay ~$40k. The same vehicle in the petrol variant, also privately, will cost you ~$32k tops.

Ignoring servicing costs, and assuming a consistent ratio of diesel : petrol consumption towing v. not towing at Perth's current metro prices ($1.50 diesel, $1.40 ULP), you would have to drive >135,000km in the diesel to realise any savings on fuel over the petrol. By which time you've got a >250,000km vehicle. (The ratio is consistent from our fleet data, we have 6yrs of 1KD v. 1GR data).

That's a long way. And the petrol is for me a much nicer drive....

                  • 2009 GXL D4D - No bar or roof racks.

Just took the three kids and a boot full of gear for a weekend to Hervey Bay and we did about 668 klm on 64.04lt of Diesel.

I'm pretty happy I think. Will need to do some more trips to see how it varies. The missus uses it during the week and she rekons it uses a lot of fuel so I am starting to test it to see how it goes.

                    • My 2008 (new to me in the last 3 months) averages 10.6 around town and the worst I've had is 12.9 while doing one of my city based jobs. Imagine the worst type of driving pattern and that's what this job entails. I cover about 60 -110 k's in 5 or 7 hrs of driving.

Going by your numbers it returned 9.6l/100 which is great.

                      • I got better than 9s running at 100km/hr along the freeway with my new engine which has done just over 2,000km. ARB bar, rhino racks and BFGs so it's no aerodynamic wonder. Pushing 120 - 125 along GE Hwy Perth to Kalgoorlie against the big winds yesterday she averaged 12.6L/100km which is pretty good compared to what it burned pre-detonation.

                        • I have a late 04 V6 Auto (5 speed / just after they changed from 4 speed to 5 speed) and the economy is around 12-13 Litres per 100km with normal driving conditions. I have ARB Bar, 265/65/17 Bridgestone AT's & OME suspension with approximate 2.5 inch lift.

I recently did 7000km red centre trip towing a camper trailer (approx 1800kg fully loaded) and I also made the never again decision of travelling with a Rhino pod to help with 2 kids gear including a guitar. The best economy I get was about 17.5 litres p/100km on flat terrain / no head wind sitting on about 100. The worst I got was was about 22 litres p/100km in hilly terrain and I was pushing the speed a bit at around 110km. (in that undulating country around Burra in SA). I found that towing in 4th gear achieved slightly better fuel economy but still occasionally used 5th when on a long gradual down hill run etc. Very happy with the V6 and the 5 speed auto.

Do owners of the D4D 5 speed auto find that they also prefer to tow in 4th or does the increased torque of the D4D allow better towing in 5th? (i.e. will it hold better in 5th) I just wasnt sure if the towing in 4th was something more relevant to the V6?

                          Cheers Lodgey

                          • Hi lodgey. I have an 06 Gxl d4d 5 speed auto and tow a 2.5 tonne caravan around the Place( currently in cq) I tow using the ATF and egt temperature gauges and try to keep the auto trans temp uner 110 degree and the exhaust gas temp under 420 degree, if the trans temp starts to increase I slip the auto into 4th and watch the temp
                            Drop immediately,

I have D4D 2009 Auto 5spd and pretty sure in the owners manual it said only tow in 4th. I could be wrong but check what the owners manual says.
I thought it might have something to do with the 5th gear being to light for the load.

                              • I only get about 1000km from 180 litres, which equates to 18 litres per 100 km. 1kz te, 5 spd manual with a tad over 300 000km. I have steel bar, snorkel, 2.75 inch exhaust and dp chip set on 6. Would love to get better economy, but not too sure what else I can do.
