  • One of the things I have found through the forum is that the air mass flow sensor between the air cleaner and the turbo needs to be cleaned occasionally. My 2008 GXL diesel has 130000kms and I was getting what I thought was high fuel consumption around town (Darwin) approx. 15 Litres/100ks. After cleaning the mas airflow sensor it went down to 11-12 Klms/100ks a marked improvement

        • Interesting reading. I am getting figures not even close to this.

We have a 2004 GXL V6 4sp with 140,000 on the clock. Had it for about 6 months. With my wife doing the school drop offs and general around town stuff we get 18 - 19l/100, but the highest has been 21. I've managed to get it down to 17's on a trip to Newcastle. We have Rhino rack aero bars, cooper ATR's and no other mods. I don't drive like a maniac either. Revs rarely at 3000, mostly stay down around 2000.

The best we have every had is 16.8 which was on holidays driving around the flat country roads around Dubbo.

Cleaned the MAF sensor once after reading advice on the forum. Idle jumped dramatically, but fuel consumption only decreased by around 0.5l. Had it taken to Toyota for the 1st service and they also recommended changing the air filter, which we did, but the old one was immaculate as the car has only ever done city driving. Checked and cleaned the sensor the other day, and very clean & shiny.

Seems to be much higher than what other people are recording.

          • I have 04 VX 3lt T/D. It is the 1kz-te motor. When purchased it was standard other than an exhaust and a unichip. Fuel consumption was 12.5lt / 100 most days and I even managed 10lt /100 driving Melb - Syd. Now, I have added an ARB Deluxe Bar, Snorkel and a FrontRunner roof rack (Mostly Flat) and I am consistently over 15lt /100. I am a conservative driver and am wondering if this would be considered normal for this vehicle? I am not overly impressed.

            • I get around or just under 600k per tank. Or on the scan gauge between 14-15ltrs per 100km's. This is mostly flat highway driving sitting on 100km per hour/ 6th gear and a touch over 2grand on the tacho. Tyres on 35psi cold, BP diesel only, couple 100ml of Chemtech diesel additive every tank or so, serviced every 5000km, exhaust and chip and I consider my build in the heavyweight category for a 120. I can get it down to around the 12.5 mark when I have all the weight off and just putting around here and there. I find the fuel gauge has a bit of a shadow on it and not a true indicator of what I have left, if anything it shows its used more than the scan gauge and fuel receipts.

              Cheers,

Tom some times it won't hurt to disconnect the battery for a while and reset everything, just make sure u have the pin for radio. My old 120 when wife just drove short distance every day, but I did get better than that on the highway. 13.5-14 was more like my highway figures.

                • I have a 2004 1KZ-TE with 160K on the clock. Have dual batteries, BFG's, snorkel, Rhino HD roof bars and what used to be a 2 inch lift. I drive around town alot and usually average 13.5 - 15l/100k depending on how I'm driving it.

Last years trip Mel - Darwin - Broome - Perth - Mel fully loaded pulling a Tambo Cooper was mostly 16-17l/100k. There was a 14.87l, but also a 20.52l refill in there too (probably head/tail wind related).

Overall I'm pretty happy with all those figures.

Exactly the same set up as ours, and in 8 years of tracking fuel consumption.... they are the exact same figures that we get.

                      • I have a Prado 95 (1KZ-TE) that has done 280k km, with lift, roof rack, 267/75 tyres and lots of extra weight (steel bar, winch, rock sliders, bash plate, awning, 2x large solar panels, rack systems with 80L fridge, tools, etc...), and I live at the top of a very big hill which makes a difference when I do lots of short trips. I get around 13-14l/100 for normal town driving, and just under 13L on highway runs. With the Customline camper in tow last year I was getting anywhere between 14-16L depending on the terrain. These figures are all with an Econokit fitted. Without the Econokit I usually use about 1L/100km more without the camper, and about 2l/100 more with the trailer in tow. The kit more than paid for itself on the trip, plus it helps keep the EGT's down a bit too. I'm working out a deal with the importer - if anyone is interested send me a pm.

                        • Hi folks,
I've owned my beloved 120 Series for 10 years now. She'll be sold soon to make way for a 150 that I pick up next week; So time has come to reconcile and share a decade of fuel consumption records.

                          Key stats:
                          10 years;139 fill ups
                          20,467 litres
                          146,153km
                          14.0 l/100km

(Prado GXL 2004 diesel auto 1KZ-TE; TJM steel bullbar, Airtec snorkel, driving lights, roof bars)

Chart 1: Fuel consumption between each fill up

                          Notes:
0-60,000km: No kids, living in country, beach driving and boat towing
+60,000km: Moved to city, had kids, sold boat, no more beach driving
+130,000km: Eldest at school. Estimated 6hrs of idling with aircon on for school pickup per tank of dieso

I'm keen to see how the 150 compares over then next ten years....

                          • That's amazing stats and interesting results. What is sad is that you kept records for 10 years to show you (or your car) spent 6hrs per tank idling outside schools!
