Use contact cleaner or good ol carby cleaner, doesn't leave any residue when it drys, I do it to all my cars petty and oil burner they run better after a squirt if I haven't done it for a while, last one was after I returned from my Broome trip visiting sis and her hubby,

      New BFG 265/70/17 tyres

Most recent fuel return is 9.399 / 100Kms. 60% highway and 40% stop start and off road.

And yes, I have been known to have a heavy foot from time to time.

      • Hello boys,
I have an 06 1kz auto, no mods to engine bought it with 165ks and not an exceptional logbook history a few 10 thousands but got it for a good price, got 186k now, change oil and filter at every 5k it seems to run quite well allways starts ist time,
Dont do many big trips mainly short trips not been offroad yet, bought it to tow a caravan,
Question is I fill my tanks up till the first time the pump stops so assume 180 lts, the 90 ltr light comes on at 700 ks so asuming 12.85 l per 100 ks,would any major services need doing on thies figures, Im thinking of glow plugs / injectors or can they it be checked on the vehicle, all help would be appreciated,
I live in Joondalup area in Perth, so any good diesel mechanics apart from Toyota dealers,
        Regards Alan.

Just did a big round trip on the weekend from Perth to Denmark then Albany then back to Perth. 1048km
15.2/100 rather disappointed with those figures as it had a big service last week. Thought it would be better.
It wasn't too windy and I used cruise most of the time at 110 but I did notice it kicking down gears when going up hills trying to maintain the set speed I guess.

Sure you weren't driving into a head wind?

            • Pretty sure it wasn't. But of rain and lots of fog on Thursday night on the way down, weather was really good for Albany over the weekend too. Horrible east wind all night here in Perth ATM lucky it wasn't yesterday when I came home

              • My first refill last night after the initial fill after buying it.
                135L and 1026km all around Sydney city driving = 13.23 L/100

2003 1KZ Manual 265/70 Cooper well worn highway tyres. I haven't made any adjustments to that figure although speedo seems to read low by close to 5%. Assuming even 4% and real world figure would be 12.7L/100 which is a little worse than my old 2000 model.
                Cheers, Dave

                • Just like blakmoth I too am pist off with the 03 120 auto diesel I have just bought.
This car is a one owner of a mate of mine from the model club and when he mentioned to me awhile back he was going to trade up I said I would have it as it is in real good nick with only a 181 klicks on it, religiously serviced and maintained by CMI.
The reason I wanted this car is to do the grey nomad trips up north etc, so I bought myself a little Cub camper trailer and converted that to off road and three weeks ago we excitedly hit the road with high expectations of good fuel economy, heaps of power and the Prado comfort, well what a disappointment, power and comfort is great but fuel economy forget it! and as for the auto box with the ridiculously useless cruise control it makes driving this car a task and not a pleasure.
Back to the fuel side of things with my figures worked out from full tank to full tank, upon purchase I filled it too the brim and did 368 ks around my local area using 61.3 lt of fuel which equates to 6.033 ks/lt or 16.575/100 that was a shock to the system.
Now for our trip, all loaded up and on the road I went straight down and weighed the whole lot and all up we went 3.8 ton with 1180 kg of that being the camper which tucks in nicely behind the car and I would imagine does not have too much of a bearing on fuel economies due to wind drag but more towed weight only.
Off we went up north and did all the spots Birdsville , Arkaroola, Innamincka and all the recognised spots in between and bear in mind that I don't thrash my cars and am in no hurry so we just stooged along at 85-90 clicks on the cruise where possible and a bit slower on the dirt.
Total trip was 3623 klicks using 545 lts fuel equates to 6.647ks/lt or 15.044 lt/100 with our best consumption being 6.688 ks/lt.
So I am very disappointed with this car and like many posters before me with similar problems am wondering what to do about it and where to take it for a tune up or what ever.
I am now really pist off and have started researching the lowluxes BT 50s etc ,have parked up the Prado and am getting around in my V6 Delica as its cheaper to run.
                  cheers Mick

                  • an '03 doesn't have the CRD.

I don't know specifics on that model of diesel, but (and might be wrong here) did you get the injectors checked out? Being serviced at Toyota doesn't mean squat.

                    Is the autogearbox slipping?

Did you get it inspected first?

Dunno bout him but I certainly did so the extra fuel cost doesn't matter. Will see what the fuel economy is like this weekend when we take the camper for its first run to Jurien.

                        • The last thing I really worry about is fuel economy when I'm holidaying. Sure, it's more important for some but I don't get all emotional and jot down every fill and every kilometre. If I did it would probably scare me. I could drive slower when towing to conserve fuel if I wanted. Nobody wants to drive a gas guzzler - I get that too.

                          • Just remember some guys are posting 120 d4d fuel figures not 120 1kz.

I have a 04 1kz manual and your figures seem ok. out of factory they say 11.5lt/100 which im sure they never do unless your on a long trip doing 70km/h with no weight and a tail wind. :P

Mine is lifted with Bullbar & Thule pod on top and i get around 13- 13.5L/100 without fuel consumption in mind, 110-120 down the freeway isn't going to get you good figures unfortunately.

15lt/100 towing that load you wont do better in any 2003-2006 1kz mate unfortunately. What you get in reliability

                            • Yeah maybe I'm dreaming with all the stuff I've got on mine. the holiday is more important than watching the needle go down 😉 at least with a camper I can now carry more fuel haha but it's not like I'm gonna be miles away from a servo either any time soon

                              • '03 120 1KD-FTV 3.0L D4D. Manual 5-speed. Nokian WR G2 265/65 R17 V116.

Just changed all injectors about 500km ago.

                                Pre-change, 11L/100km.

After 450km, all town driving, 9.4km/100L.

Gave it to the wife who drove it for 50km, average has now gone to 9.8km.

Certainly makes a difference how you drive.
