Just got back from a trip up round the kimberly, fully loaded and 4wd camp trailer on the back. I did 11500km in six weeks and the fuel consumption averaged out to be 21.5 lt per 100km.

I herd from a diesel specialist the other day that the 1kz te engines have fuel pump issues, which could cause high consumption. Perhaps taking it to a diesel place and get it checked out...

        Hey,

How do I do this or will i have to take it to a Toyota Dealer?

          Hey guys,

Reviving an old thread here... I have had my 2005 1kz grande for about 2 years now. When I first picked it up it was using an average of 12-13L per 100km. Now with all my accessories. 265 70 muddies, steel bar, winch, lights, dual batteries, awning, roof rack, snorkel, DP Chip, it uses about 16L per 100km average mixed driving. I wouldnt say I drive it super hard, but I dont drive it like an old man either. It has 160 000kms on it and its always regularly serviced. It also had its full diesel service at 150 000kms, including injector replacement etc. The diesel mechanic suggested it could be the diesel pump if it is still using excessive fuel. I havent had that done yet cause it was quoted to cost up to 2k to refurbish it. I wonder what a new one is worth? I am going to give my throttle body and manifold a clean out soon and see if that makes it any better... would love 12-13L per 100 again lol

          Cheers

            Hi Troy,

is it an auto or manual? It seems the autos use 2L/100km more give or take from reading threads on here. Ive got a 2004 1kz, manual and have similar accessories to you but no chip and I get about 13-14L/100km around town. I don't have the roof top tent does yours stay on all the time? that would probably be the difference if it did with the weight and wind resistance. Ive got an exhaust which you don't but no chip.

Mine used about 12L/100 when I bought it standard but now with lift, wheels, weight it is up around 14L/100km

Mine only has 107,000kms on it so maybe that is also a contributing factor.

              Hey Prado2004,

Yeah mine is an auto. No the tent doesnt stay on but the ARB roof bar and awning are always on there which i guess probably adds a litre per 100

                I have had my 2003 1kz man for over 2 years now & get 12-14 lt per 100 k.
This includes a mix of driving, most tanks usually include some offroad driving.
It does get a little worse in constant soft sand driving, eg; Simpson crossing might have been 16ish.
My current fill done 850k so far & 90lt light not on yet. It seems there are plenty of others that seem to be using more fuel.

                So what's the difference?

The main things on these engines that might affect fuel economy seem to be fuel pump or injector problems & driving habits (in particular speed), wind drag from accessories adds a bit.
I do drive it like a diesel, some will call that like an old man, if you try & get around fast it will make a big difference.
Try to keep revs close to 2-2500rpm. Not usually any need to go past 3000.

If you have exhaust & chips then your not an old man, & likely driving much harder.
I guess what I'm saying is I think you can save $$$ by slowing down????? I know many ppl don't care about economy & $$$ so that's fine.

Also when changing from 65 to 70 series tyres my fuel economy did not get worse, it just looks 2% worse on odometer which is now 2% incorrect, eg; my odometer says 850k now, but I have really travelled 875kish, but I not even bother to add that in.

There's some more dribble for you, hope some of it makes sense.

I agree, I always change at 2000-2500 rpm very rarely 3000 unless going up a steep hill. Let be honest anyway, the 1kz doesn't really have any power passed 3000rpm anyway! hahaha.

                    #### I must say getting to 850km without the 90L light on is good though, mine usually clicks on about 700km and I usually get 1300km when the empty light comes on for the last tank.

In relation to the exhaust I put it on solely as I tow a camper and wanted to be sure EGT remained low. I plan on keeping my 1kz for many years to come and that is the quickest way to detonate it with high EGT's. I still change gears the same with the exhaust as I did without it, in my honest opinion the car has a lot more response now with the exhaust, I love it.

I am thinking i might get the pump rebuilt when I have the $$$ Anyone have any idea what a new one is worth? Exhaust is already high on the list, would you say you gain about 1L per 100 with new exhaust and dump?

                      Cheers

                        From Toyota? try $4K plus.

                        $1500 - 2000 for a rebuild.

Personally I think these pumps are fairly rock solid, I'd be spending money elsewhere first.

I still get mid to high 11's mixed driving and am about to hit the 10's again after some recent intake mods.

The going rate appears to @3% better economy. I've the same exhaust as Prado2004. Did not buy it for the better economy(????) however it wants to pull more low down and responds slightly better to the throttle. I still drive it like a diesel though. Well worth the money (if u have it as they are not cheap). A few threads say ignore the dump and just have a straight thru muffler (saving loads) but personally I could not see the point. Horses 4 courses. Enjoy the ole girl!

                            ignore the dump
I agree.. F that, for a couple of hundred bucks extra while your doing the exhaust it's worth doing, and when you compare an aftermarket dump to the factory one it's like chalk and cheese. You can barely fit a box of matches in the factory dump it's so restrictive.
An after market dump will drop EGT's more than changing the muffler alone.
The factory pipe is actually pretty good with some reasonable quality bend with the exception of the bend that goes over the rear axle.

The pic below shows the factory dump, if you look inside you can see it narrows about an inch back from the outlet, the after market one has its narrowest point at the outlet (2 3/4inch) and in 3 inches further back.

Mine is a 2003 with 275/75/17 coopers st under it and a roof rack. I drive around 1400 k's a week with a lot of start/stops. On average it is doing between 8.5 and 9.3 km/l. I think that is not bad at all. O and the car has clocked up till now 282.000 k's.
I think I'am happy with this.
