  • D4D - Just started playing up at start up

    Guys,
Once yesterday and again today, I jumped into my truck and kicked it over (warm). The engine made a strange knocking/clicking noise for a few seconds then went to normal idle, but it was bellowing a sh$% load of smoke. After a few minutes, the smoke clears and all seems normal again. Drives fine.
On both occasions, maybe by coincidence, I had parked it on a slight down slope.
I'm suspecting a leaking injector seal cause fuel to pool on the piston (but I'm no mechanic).
The first time it was parked for maybe 30 minutes. The second time 3hrs or so. But is was fine after parking it over night.
Anyone got a clue what might cause it.... I'm a little concerned something may go bang while I'm driving it.
    Thanks, Sean.

    Gday ToeEdge

    Doesnt sound good Mate.

Qote: I jumped into my truck and kicked it over (warm). The engine made a strange knocking/clicking noise for a few seconds then went to normal idle, but it was bellowing a sh$% load of smoke

Answer: Before jumping to the worst scenario i would get an injector value check.

    # Once ruled out the injector leaking then probably be injector seating washer

    # If is injector seating washer it would probably (More than likely) be cheaper to get a diesel mechanic over the dealer to do the job unless still under a warranty.

Here is a link that might help below if doing injector seals outside of toyota.
    http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...l=1#post348832

If happy (Figure of speech) with prognoses of injector seats then obviously checking the oil-pick-up is a must.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers

Thanks Skywalker! I'll be giving Berrima Diesel a call on Tuesday to get it sussed.

Yep... Sounds like an injector seal is leaking. Probably #1 or #2. The smoke at startup is commonly seen when the vehicle has been parked nose downhill for an hour or two.

I would get it fixed asap if I were you. You may need to have an injector replaced as well. In my experience, the injector with the leaking seal plays up for good if it has been incased in carbon buildup. Injectors for that model are about $600.00 or so.
It will probably cost about $800.00 or more to do the work, depending on how bad the injector is stuck in situ, if at all.
If it were me, I would be getting the sub-sump bowel removed as well, and the oil pickup screen cleaned properly. Obviously then needs new oil and filter.

All up, the job might cost about $1800.00 or so. Obviously, you may be lucky and not have to replace any injectors, which will reduce the cost significantly. If it does need the work done, make sure you take it to someone that is familiar with the work, and has the right equipment at hand identify a faulty injector and then to code in any injectors that may need replacing.

If you want to know a couple of places in Sydney that regularly do this job, send me a PM and I'll fill you in.

        Best of luck.

            Cheers,

Hi AJ, It's done 142,000km. I bought it when it had just over 80,000 and service it every 5000km.

Out of curiosity I went and bought a Camera Scope today. Dumped the oil and had a squiz at the oil pickup. It looks clear to me, just a little gunk. Unfortunately, the camera is too big to get right inside the sump, but this is the view through the sump plug -

Mines starting to play up on cold starts. It blows a fair bit of smoke after starting. Not immediately, but I first noticed it when reversing out of the driveway, obviously not much accelerator. I've got it at Toyota now and they ran a test last night but didn't find anything. I told them to keep it another night and test it again. Use the same process I use. start up, let idle for a little and then give the accelerator a little press, black smoke will come out. I'm abou to see how good my extended factory warranty is. I brought a 6 year, 150,000km plan. Still within that (103,000kms). Find out more tomorrow......
                  ...........Heaps of cool stuff

                    G'day Toey,

Glad you checked the pickup, Its relatively clear, although some early signs of buildup, not enough to worry too much about and it is good to deal with these issues before the problem advances, although this is a tell tale sign that its time to check Injectors & seals, as you have discovered.

                    Good luck with it mate.
