  • Which is more fuel efficient? New D4D or old 3.0?

I've been told by a number of people that the new D4D is more powerful than the 3.0 (yep, the specs says it all) but these people are also saying that the D4D is more thirsty than the old engine.

Is this true? I'd rather it it from people who have upgraded from the old motor to the new D4D motor.

    Lawrance,

I haven't upgraded but I have a D4D and regularly tavel with a mate who has the older TD and we compare fuel consumption.
The D4D definately uses less fuel than the TD.
There is normally about 1 L/100Km difference between the vehicles. But I think the gap would be wider on two standard vehicles as I have done more mods that adversely effect fuel economy (roof rack / bull bar) then my mate.

      lawrance,
maybe this heading should be in the Diesel section, where I'm am sure you will find a lot of postings about the fuel efficiency & power of both engines.

From the earlier 3.0 litre turbo, although a great engine, I have yet to see 8.5 litres per 100kl (I got those figures Melb to Sydney whilst still running in) could have been better but for 2 trips in peak hour Sydney traffic.

The very worst I have had so far is 11.67 litres per 100kl & that was towing 2
5 metre boats piggy back from Melb to Wodonga & return plus a lot of peak hour Melbourne traffic.

Maybe check out some the other postings?

"Hey by the way", are you still going to order a Prado or are we still researching :?: :?: :?:

      Cheers,

So on the road, how do the two compare speed/power wise?

          Hey Fazza,

Still researching. Actually, I'm now waiting to see what the 200 Series Land Cruiser pricing will look like when it is released 12th Nov 07 in Australia. I'm wondering whether the order will look like a Prado VX D4D or a 200 Series Cruiser TDV8 base model.

          Cheers!

              StormyKnight,

As you'd expect with the extra torque/power and the extra gear the D4D eats a TD, most noticable when over taking the TD tends to run out of legs.

I know $105 000 fleet price + orc. Might not have been base model though.

Have you noticed I'm looking for a Dtronic?

Also, this may be a silly question, how can you easily tell if a 120 has the old 3.0L or the D4D? Especially from the back as they wizz past!

The only way I have been able to tell is with the D4D badge on the sides.

To answer Lawarances questions on the pricing of a new 200

                        70k for GXL petrol
                        80k for a VX petrol
                        95 Sahara petrol

                        All TD's 10k more

GXL TD doenst have KDSS standard, but will on upgrade later on
VX and Sahara only have main tank, no sub...go figure

Above prices are retail, fleet will be about 12.5% less at highest level

Saw one last night and had a bit of a play, very noice, lots of new bits, keyless entry and start, all sorts of good trickey bits, lousy departure angle, rear cargo area is big enough to hold a party and invite 50 of your best mates
KDSS looks like the ducks guts, just have to wait to see what aftermarket bits can hang off it to raise it bum skyward

Congrats to all you Prado owners.

You have more payload capacity than the 200 Series Cruiser.

When you take the tare weight off the GVM of the 200 Series, and compare the result with doing the same exercise off the Prado, the Cruiser manages only 600 kgs. The Prado musters a better figure of 780 kgs.

With a 180 litre fuel tank in the Prado, and a bigger payload, I think I know which vehicle will be a better Outback trip vehicle. The 200 Series may be vastly bigger in the cargo space area but if you filled it up with all the stuff that you can fit from a Prado into the 200 Series, and then add some more, the vehicle will technically be illegally overloaded. :?

Plus the TDV8 engine bay looks really crowded, so if a repair needs to be done in the bush, it would be a lot harder to work on.

I'd say that the smart buy at the moment after comparing the Prado to the 200 Series is the Prado - and I'm not saying that simply because I'm in the Prado forum but because of what's practical.

The 200 Series would be good for towing on the bitumen and perhaps on some dirt roads, but not too far away from civilisation, I'd imagine. Perfect for the grey nomads.
