  • Secondary fuel filter issues racor 230r with 10 micron filter

    Hi guys,

A couple of weeks ago I finally got around to fitting the racor secondary fuel filter, everything seemed to be doing fine until the car sat for a couple of days,

The first time i went to start the car it just turned over a couplr of times until i just popped the bonnet and re primed the fuel filter, (the clear filter bowl was still full) and then she fired straight away, while its running there isnt any dramas, and just leaving it over night doesnt cause the same issue. I also re bled the system and i did get some more air out..

Then tonight I decided to check again, the car has again been sitting for three days as I'm at work, and yep same thing, this time I have just bypassed the secondary filter and just using the main filter. I have 4 more days at work so will check in a couple of days to make sure she fires straight away and doesnt need priming, if she fires it definitely the racor unit.

Has anyone else had this issue when fitting a secondary fuel filter to the d4d?

    Cheers

    Craig

It sounds like you are getting air in the system. You more then likely have a lose connection or leaking seal.

Don't be fooled by thinking that because it's not leaking fuel, that you have no leaks. I had the same problem and once I got around to checking all the fittings, I found one that was so lose that the hose was the only thing keeping it in position. I was able the turn the fitting 2 full turns before it went tight.

Morale of the story, check the basics first.

Good luck with it, hope it's as easy to fix as mine.

Thanks mate. Yea that's what I'm hoping, the fittings are nice and tight, I will take it off when I get home and pull the filter apart to make sure it's all sealing properly,

Thanks roo, will also do that upon re install when I get home, I must admit it was fully assembled when it arrived so didn't pull it apart, probably a rookie mistake, although its been fun. Got the welding skills back up making up a custom bracket, also have made up a bracket to be able to use the pro vent catch can, she's a big unit, so had to utilize space from where the spare batt would go...

People, just talking about catch cans, don't fill a empty catch can with steel wool as it can find it's way to the turbine in the turbo. And boy, it can make a mess in there.
Good one Ghost, and I hope there is no more dramas mate.

Yea that's why I ended up going the Provent, it does have maint costs like you said but I like the idea of the filtration, and I figure it's just another part of the upkeep, haven't fitted it yet, will be doing that this break, just need to get the tubing and work out how it attaches to the Pcv, looks pretty straight forward tho

From there you will see a little bit of hose on the driver's side coming out of the rocker cover on the side there, well, towards the back there. You can't really miss it. Now the hose bends on a 90 degree angle. Take that bit of hose off and run some R7 fuel hose or oil hose from the straight pipe to the inlet of the Provent. Now you may have to reduce the hose down to make it fit. I am not sure whether you have the 10mm or the 15mm fitting on the Provent. Once you have done that, run some hose from the outlet of the Provent back to the pipe that goes to the turbo completing the loop.

Reinstall your intercooler and the jobs done. I do like stainless steel hose clamps on everything so there is no chance of an air leak from outside of the system.
Hope this helps Ghost, the Roo.
Thanks Roo! Yea the Pipe is 15mm I'm pretty sure, it's a fairly large opening. Home tomorrow night so will get stuck into it very soon.

It sounds like Drew, you are going to have Cape withdrawals. It sucks and I liken it to jet lag.

PS, look forward to that trip report.
Thanks roo! I got a chance to remove the filter this morning, it was leaking, very small amount, but it was from where the main filter attaches to the housing, have re assembled and greased the seals, just need to pop in and get that loctite to re fit the fittings.

                  Cheers craig
