    Gday people,
    I have a 2003 1Kz auto which has started running rough while sitting at the lights in drive. As I just said when I am stationary with the vehicle in drive the motor will start to fluctuate about 100rpm, from 700rpm down to about 600rpm when this occurs it also will start to smoke, it doesnt appear to be blue smoke more a white. If I lift the revs back to about 750-800rpm she runs smooth and the smoking stops, same if I drop it into neutral the roughness stops as does the smoking.
    It is the only time it does this too, under acceleration its fine, climbing under load its fine too, when just in park and idle no dramas its kinda got me confused. I did go to my local Toyota dealer for some advice but the guy seemed more interested in getting my vehicle in there so I could spend money. The only thing he suggested it might be was the injectors and for about $150 they could clean em out But there is no guarentee that would fix the issue, Then he added it might be worth just waiting to see if the problem got worse!!!!.
    Now its not a major issue right now but "waiting to see if the problem gets worse" aint exactly the way I like to do things. If anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them.

    Before you start thinking the worst of things i would check that the EGR valve is closing properly as this sounds like the symptoms of the EGR is not closing properly.

    In saying this i would have thought that the EGR lifting sensor would have thrown a fault code?

    White smoke can also translate to raw fuel but i would have thought that would also cause over-fueling at higher revs.

    Blown head gasket would carry a smell of coolant and heavy condensation at the tail pipe!

      I had a similar issue with my d4d a few months back, mine turned out to be a faulty injector, don't know if this could be the case

        Thanks for the replies guys,
        I will investigate the EGR valve and see what I can find I didnt think it would be a head gasket because I would have thought the issue would be more of a constant issue under acceleration, I also would have thought the same about it being an injector but then again im not a mechanic... I had it serviced only a couple weeks ago too and they said they would check the injectors, I might have to go back and have a little whisper in their ears and find out whether they actually did or not.

          With my injector it was intermittent, which also suprised me when Toyota told me it was dodgy, and they wernt trying to get coin out of me as it was under warranty

            You really should get it to a decent mechanic as soon as you can.

            It could be any number of things that are causing the symptoms as you describe, but it is next to impossible to accurately diagnose here. If you do have a head/gasket problem, it should be attended to asap as the ongoing resultant damage could be really expensive to fix.

            Maybe start another thread.... Can anyone reccomend a good meachanic that is good at diagnostics in ???? area.
            2008 Diesel Prado with extra stuff added. I drive it on the road and other places too.

              Just out of curiosity what are other peoples vehicles idle speeds while in drive?

                Hi All,
                I also had the rough idle, Toyota did cold start test, 1 injector out of spec 1 borderline, they changed 2 injectors under warranty, other day felt slight fluctuation in idle while waiting at traffic lights, not sure if im paranoid now.
                RPM is around 700 mark

                  It needs to go into a decent workshop so that a scan tool can be hooked up and see if any faults codes exist,check the injector compensation readings etc and be sure all the readiness tests have been done
                  It is a waste of time just guessing as to what is the cause otherwise
                  If you ask them if they can do a readiness test and they cant give you an answer, move on to somebody else
