  • Do the tanks switch over at 90ltr or a guide only?

    Hi Blokes,
I have always thought that our Prado's used 90 ltrs from the first tank then switched over to the second tank. After reading more about the fuel system I'm confused (easy to do).
My old reasoning used to be - right.... 750km on this tank therefore I should be able to get 750 km from the switchover to tank #2, given that the terrain and driving doesn't change.
I find I usually have 20+ltrs left in the tank when the fuel light comes on. Am I wrong in my thinking?

From my experience it is about 100L then 80L, the fuel system uses a venturi to transfer fuel. Have a search there are lots of posts on this.

The Prado is often reffered to as having 2 x 90 litre tanks, but I think the rear (first one used) is 93 litres and the second 87 litres. Always get more K's from the first tank, warning light comes with 15 litres left in tank as well.

Only a guide, different to the old 90 series which i thought was heaps better set up been able to control it yourself. I find with mine it will drop down just under the halfway mark on the gauge before it flicks back to the full mark and the green light comes on but I do find it drops down quicker from the full mark then when on the first tank.
          [IMG][/IMG]
Then to this once it has changed over
          [IMG][/IMG]
But after a minute or two the gauge will drop down directly onto the full mark indicator. This is a V6 but not a D4D or 1KZ but presuming the fuel set up is the same ?? ............Cheers Steve

This has been discussed over and over (with the same type of question being asked many times before and locked as a result). Let's not start another.

But - to try and help - by the time the first tank switches over, you have used more than the 90L. One of the (many) previous threads on this gives a pretty accurate reading of the ratios of fuel between the two tanks when in operation. Roughly, from memory, it is 96/83L.

I will post a link to an existing thread soon. But please try searching topic first.

When it's on the 1st tank, that actually shows the OVERALL fuel position.
So when it's 3/4, it's 3/4 of the entire fuel on board. 1/2 is half the fuel onboard etc.
When it changes to the 90 display, that is showing the amount of fuel remaining based on 90 litres.
                ...........Heaps of cool stuff

                  Bruce,

The fuel is actually always drawn from the front tank to feed the engine in the 120. There's no "switching" between tanks on the 120 (as there was on the 95). There is a jet-pump that continually transfers fuel from the sub tank to the front tank (which effectively keeps it full whilst ever there's fuel in the sub). The fuel gauge drops from full to about 1/2 as the sub is transferred to the front tank during normal use. Once the sub is roughly empty, the "90" light comes on to tell you that the sub is empty and the main tank level is now dropping.

PS, I think in the later 120's an electric pump is used for fuel transfer. But I stand to be corrected.
