  • Dump Pipe drilling for EGT

Many apologies for revisiting an old thread, but many of the prev threads have had photos disappear etc..

I am in the process of installing an EGT probe. I am happy to go with post-turbo taking into account all the pros and cons.

I am having some difficulty working out exactly where to install as the instructions that came with the probe (Autometer) state "drill a hole about 6" down from the junction of the exhaust pipe to manifold junction". Is that 6 inches going away or towards the engine?

To make my dilemma clearer I have included a photo. I would like to confirm where the hole goes before i dismantle everything. In the photo the heat shield is still installed.

    1) is post dump-pipe/exhaust junction
    2) is tail end of dump pipe
    3) is just after turbo in dump pipe.

p.s. are there any risks of drilling post turbo if engine running?

    Cheers,

    james

You want number 3, in dump pipe after Turbo to dump pipe flange. On the Manta exhaust its mounted about 25mm from the beginning of the dump pipe after the flange. I don't know why you would want the engine running during the drilling process. The shavings should fall straight down the dump pipe and exhaust gas will blow them towards the cat/muffler. It may be easier to remove the pipe for drilling although the 3 studs can be difficult to get at.

      Thanks for reply Bushbasher.

I did notice I labelled my own photo incorrectly.

      1) is just after turbo in dump pipe
      2) is tail end of dump pipe
      3) is post dump-pipe/exhaust junction

So no damage to the cat/muffler if iron shavings/dust gets into it? I read that when people drill exhaust manifold they run the engine to prevent filings going into the turbo.

      cheers

You won't get the drill to it if you want to put the sensor close to the turbo/dump pipe flange. I'd be inclined to drop the pipe down clear of the turbo flange and that way you can get a better go at it.
