I do believe however that without this thread and all the other related threads there would actually be MANY more as lots of people have taken corrective action, which is great and the reason for great forums like this. I just wish i had better access to the forum when i was travelling as the problem started to really covered by posts after i had left home.
Anyway i am glad to be able to help other people out from having to deal with this major problem.
        Hi Benny,

Yes, there are quite a few of us out there. I have spent most of the day preparing my case for small claims court. I have reported Toyota Australia, to Consumer Affairs, the ACCC, and the Department of Infrastructure & Transport. I've done a lot of leg work in preparation so Toyota Australia, cannot turn around and say ' We were not aware of the injector failure'. If you want to read what happened to me go to the original thread dated 15.1.13 'Sticky DVD injector'.

Many of us out there are not mechanically savvy, and get fobbed off by Toyota Australia. But Im one person who is not going to give up... I intend to pursue Toyota the whole nine yards.

send me a pm & we'll talk, if you like.

        gracie

Do you think we should pool our resources and class action Toyota Australia? TMC Japan would certainly sit up and take notice of "shonkey" dealerships out there.

Globally, Toyota announced a huge uplift in profit a couple of days ago. Directors in Japan call for an improvement in customer satisfaction. And in Australia.........

It seems Toyota in Australia are pushing this hot potato back onto the dealers. We all know the original injector seats were inferior and TMCA know this as well. The company line on this is the seats should have been replaced when valve clearances were inspected during service , and if not done blame the dealer. My back ground is as an Ex Toyota dealer service manager, prior to moving into management I had been on the tools and achieved Toyota Master tech status and even manager a win in a Toyota hi tech diagnosis comp.
Where the issue is a little grey is the service coupon states "inspect valve clearances" . In theory if you removed the rocker cover and measured clearances and they were in spec there is no need to remove injectors to perform this task so no need to replace seats. The company line is that to measure valve clearances the workshop manual states remove injectors thus washers have to be replaced on re install. So if a washer fails causing an engine to go bang TMCA will put it back on he or she who completed the service.
On another note I have seen prices of 18k etc mentioned on replace long motor. If you do find yourself in the situation where you need to replace a long motor shop around. The last one of these I replaced total invoice including genuine engine assy was just under 11k

Oxy Roo pointed out the Toyota instruction which details the removal of injectors, I queried my dealer's service manager who said with a particular brand of feeler gauge there is no need to disturb the injector and this has been confirmed by Rick in Unzed. So where does the "noise" check come from? Is that Tojo Oz or just some dealers?

That is bulldust, they are lying to you.

The GSIC ( Global Service Information Center ) Valve Clearance, Step 7 - clearly states to remove the injectors.

This one from Peru on the 1KD-FTV states that the injectors are to be pulled PRIOR to valve clearance. http://intranet.toyotaperu.com.pe/td...0147800ax.html

Pushing on to dealers? Could be - but if they aren't following GSIC, then well - guess what?

This is why there are no "go bang" issues in Europe or NZ - they follow instructions!

I can confirm that you can indeed inspect clearance without removing injectors . Regarding the "noise check" some techs and dealers advise they checked valve clearances using the "sensory method" . This means they listened to the engine and made an assessment that the valves sounded normal. I have never met anyone who can pick up a slightly tight exhaust valve using sensory method Say spec was .25mm-.35 mm I reckon you would have to be dam good to establish a valve to be at say .15mm .

I agree, just wondered if this was coming only from dealers saving a few $ on the fixed price service. And it appears it is. I assume Toyota reimburse dealers the difference between actual service costs and the fixed price servicing? I changed servicing centres between the 40k and 80k service and was surprised at the request for the car overnight at the 80k service to check valve clearances cold. Then found out the 40k service should have been the same. The dealers are taking on the risk of the old seals if they don't follow Toyotas service instructions.

Then the ball is left to the customer when their motor goes bang.....I'm sure there are Hilux owners in the same boat.

Fixed price service and churning vehicles through the "service centre". Is what the dealers want, just due to profit....

Fixed price service was a big push by TMCA to try and make the experience between dealers uniform. Much like no matter where in Australia you buy a big mac burger it will be the same in materials and price.
Good point on putting it back on the dealer if the motor goes bang. First off you would have to prove the sets were not replaced , that could be awkward if the dealer tries to defend the case gathering evidence etc.

New short motor, 2 new injectors, inspect head, reassembly, coolant, labour = $11,000 to repair mine when it went last year. All at insurer's cost thanks to my extended warranty.
