You don't need a letter, just your VIN. They should check the dealer service network where there will be a broadcast outlining the "customer service initiative". It's not a recall. The local dealer mentioned this to me during my last service.

Bugger Bali, get out and see Australia before we sell it all to China.

Mine did it at 177K km, cost me $13K to get rebuilt.

Since then, I've been chasing all sorts of electrical ECU related "gremlins". Kinda jaded about the whole thing....as it seems to be a money pit (no I don't mean mods either).

Mine got a Rebuild at 268k (2 cracked pistons), now done 285k, and using 1litre of oil every 2,000kms!!!!, Runs and goes well but using a shit load of oil. The turbo was put back on but there was no oil use before the reco so I'm thinking rings:-(

We received the undated "Customer Service Exercise" notice 12 days ago which said we had a good couple of years to get this looked at. Unfortunately 4 days later the vehicle did exactly as described in the letter while traveling at 100kph on the F3. In the process it also did a piston. After contacting the local Toyota dealership, they did not have time to see it for 10 days as they are only allocating one vehicle per day for this exercise. Even if we had booked the vehicle in the same day the letter was received, it would not have been seen until after the failure occurred. Once we explained that the vehicle had died, they squeezed it in to see it last Friday. So far, they have denied that the corrosion of the seats caused the piston issue and say it is a completely different matter and charged us $120 per hour to diagnose the problem. After reading all the stories on this subject, I am somewhat hesitant to believe anything that Toyota tells us. We have already been quoted $11,000 for a replacement long engine from Toyota. I really don't want to pay Toyota that much money to fix a problem they appear to have created. This vehicle is 7 years old and has just over 200,000km on it. That is not many km's for a diesel but compared to engine failures described by others, it sounds like we were lucky to get this far without an issue. In comparison, my 80 series has 500,000 on it so it is more than disappointing to see the younger engine let go first. Knowing that Toyota Australia knew about the issue for quite some time, do I stand my ground and demand that Toyota fix it at their expense or do I have to pay for their mistakes?

It's sad not many know how to do a an engine rebuild. I think the new Toyota long motor is the best bet.
What parts were used in the rebuild?

                    Yes this is what happens,

Interesting, TOYOTA know how important this work is & it needs to be done URGENTLY!!!!! If not this is the results, over & over.......
One a day lol....... TOYOTA DEALERS REALLY CARE ABOUT YOU & your vehicle DON'T THEY?
A couple of years to get it done? I suggest any vehicles left with copper seats not too many will be still running in 2 years.

Moving forward, $11,000 is cheap for a new Toyota long motor with new Injectors installed!
Then go to small claims, I'd suggest there's no way Toyota will get away with any of this & they would settle & pay before they loose & it costs them more. Don't let them get away with it. Pecidence has been set!!!

NOTE: As the letter says, the seats should be changed at 40k & 80k services. You have this in writing now. Usually Toyota dealers get to do these services especially 40k. They often did not service as per the book, hence the letter, so it's simply caused by whoever did the 40k service.

I hope you have a smile now as many should as they fill out their VCAT or whatever small claims paperwork to get their $$$$$ back.

                    All the best!

                    Cheers,

                    Prado lover

Thank you for your reply and advice, Prado lover. Having just gone back through our services, it was the same Toyota dealer who did the 40, 60 & 80,000km services. No mention on the paperwork of the seats having been changed but a long list of everything else that they did. Interestingly, we took the vehicle to the same dealership in 2012 as the Engine Light was on back then. They checked codes and road tested but said it was OK and sent it home. Perhaps it wasn't?

As for caring about the vehicle, this same dealership says that Toyota Australia is only supplying one o ring and one seat per injector. That's the budget.

Also to clarify, have now found the correct date for completion of the seats to be replaced - it is May 2019, so 4 years in which to get it done, not 2.

                      Thanks again!

That's complete BS. Why would they bother to conduct a campaign to replace the seats (sheets) if there was no link between them and excessive engine wear and/or failure? The simple fact is they have failed to carry out servicing as per their own global instructions. Give it to 'em.

There you have it, all the evidence you need! Arhhhhh what fools these operators are.
Case closed, speak to service manager, g.m, d.p whatever whoever would like to do the right thing.
You have the facts at hand, if they don't want to look after you, small claims it is!

                            4 years......... LMFAO...........
I hope Toyota Aus or the dealerships has a HUGE budget for engines, what a mess!!!

While we're talking about how much they charge per hour to look at your engine, a work colleague who suffered injector failure last year has just been told that the dealer wants $1,000 just to have a look at an oil leak from the transfer case!

Which will likely be the front seal.
Seal is about $40 I think.
                                $20 of oil change.
                                Maybe a new nut $10-15?
An hour or so labour $?

                                About $250....... 1000 to looooooooookkkkkkk
