  • Running in a new D4D

I picked up my D4D last friday and I haven't had any time to do much driving so far. Now, I have to drive from Sydney to Canberra this sunday and I'm curious to know if these new modern engines need to be run-in. Someone told me that new cars should be run-in for the first 1000kms or so at variable speeds.

My drive to Canberra will be mostly freeway driving at 110kph for abot 3 hours. Is this bad for a D4D with less than 100kms on the clock or can modern engines cope with this treatment?

    Hoppy50,
First of all Congratulations with your early Christmas present.

I have always been a believer in varying the speed & loads for the first 1000 kms, so what a good opportunity you have with your trip to Canberra.
The added bonus is that the engine will be at operating temperature.
Just get out & drive, just vary the speed & load particularly on hills, at 110kph it will be doing it easy.

    Enjoy your Christmas present

      Hi Hoppy 50,
You will have no problems, it will be a good run for the new engine just vary your speed a bit which you will need to do anyway on that trip.

      Enjoy the new truck

        running in fully laden?

I am due to take delivery of my new Grande auto D4D in a couple of weeks, right before we have a camping trip planned- which would mean fully laden, towing a 2tonne boat up some fairly significant hills (I'm in Tassie). Should I do this with a new vehicle, or get it run in first? I'd hate to cause damage or shorten the life of the engine or turbo. If someone with mecahnicla knowledge of these engines could give me some advice, I'd be grateful.

          chris08,
As suggested in my earlier post. Don't be quite that hard on things for at least the first 1000 kms but just vary the load & speed.

By the way it is not just the engine you have to run in, but most of the mechanical components.
e.g. Be to harsh on your brakes could lead to warped brake disc's.

Conundrum & just when you want to go away.
I would still go away but be prepared to go a little easier.

          Enjoy your new Grande

I have been lucky enough to have owned plenty of new vehicles over the years and I still always go easy and run an engine and vehicle in.

Personally, I wouldn't be towing something like a 2 tonne boat straight up. As previously mentioned, there are plenty of components that need to be bedded in before put under stress.

Every new vehicle from a Prado to a HSV to a dirt bike I have done my best to go easy on for the first 1000km. As Fazza said, vary the speeds and the load on the vehicle and it will ensure a smooth run in.

I always do varied speeds and loads in conjunction with each other. Around the city you can do this by holding gears in 3rd 4th and 5th accelerating gently from 50-70km/h. Same on the highway, slow down to 85km/h and wind up to 110km/h in 4th, then do it in 5th, and then in 6th.

This is a simple process that lets the vehicle run in at varied speeds, varied gears, and under varied loads. Just ensure you don't have a freight train of vehicles behind you whilst you are running in your vehicle out on the road. Might cause you some issues.

              always look after the turbo

best to run in a diesel engine is lke what most people have said above and On another note the main thing you also would love to look after is the turbo !! its diesel best friend !!!

turbo can get very hot generally speaking if you drove very hard or constantly hard reving as you drive along and then shut off the engine constantly you will most likely have turbo bearings failure and shorten turbo life as well cooked oil soot levels increases which is not ideal for any diesel engines ( the black stuff)

I have added a turbo timer to my vehicle and shes running likes it day one and has now approached 148 ks ( and WELL the motor blown ) thats another story listed elsewhere on here !! (summary timing belt idler wheel cracked at pivot point causes massive damage to the engine on timing belt ) anyway the main point I like to make is when towing especially anything above 500kgs i would strongly recommend on the last couple k,s to your destination to take it easy and let the engine purrrr along once completed your journey let the engine idle for a few minutes before turning off would be ideal !!!

              Happy motoring !!

                Greater distance ... Run in?

                Hi All,
I pick up my new car (Feb 08/1500Km old) this Friday and will have to drive it from Sydney to Townsville. Its been in for its' 1500 Km Service today and I am wondering if it is ok to do a reasonably long haul drive from Sydney to Townsville?
                It is a 08 D$D auto.

                Any pointers

I wouldn't be too worried. After the first service you can drive it normally as they change out the shipping oils on the first service.
