  • Excessive fuel useage

I have a 120TDI and am getting 13.4l/100k. This has happened since new- have done 33K now. I don't drive hard and change the oil every 5K. I read that others are getting around 10 - 12 l/100k. Has anyone got any ideas what might be causing this thirst. The service people can't give me an answer. Hope I can get one here. Thanks Nobby

what fuel are you running it on (brand)..

if its shell, then i would say it has clogged up the injectors.

That seems a bit excessive. I have the 4.0l V6 and my 2 tank fulls so far have returned 13.0 & 12.8 L/100k's according to the trip computer.

And thats everday Sydney peak hour driving mainly.

Do you have any accessories that might be adding to the weight ? Another thing that sounds stupid is that a mate of mine was driving around for 6 months with the auto in the D position without overdrive, effectively making it a 3 speed. He was also wondering why the fuel usage was high !

        Nobby,

What engine is your 120 & what type of driving (city or highway)?
If your 120 is pre- D4D I think you will find that figures are about right.

        Cheers,
        Fazza

Maybe the moderators can slip this all into the diesel section

Thanks for that, the answers are, I always use Shell (no loyalty just handy), the motor is a 1KZ-TE (Dec 2005). I do about 80% city driving. I don't have any accessories to speak of - Nudge bar and side steps outside. As I said I don't drive the car hard so this high figure annoys the bejesus out of me. Thanks for the reply, Nobby

shell fuel can be bad. I know of quite a few cars in which it has been responsible for clogging the injectors by up to 60%.

try some other fuel and run an injector cleaner thru it on the next tank. Use a few tanks of non shell fuel and see how you go.

Will do, thanks for that. I suppose we all assume that all fuel is the same. Might be the reason they offer 4c/litre off - comes out of the bottom of the tanker!!

Thanks for the tip on Shell. I use Shell exculsivly because my company provide me with Shell card and I have been wondering why after only 10000k the fuel consumption for my D4D is going up.

If your Shell card allows you to put oils etc on the card you may want to start adding a bottle of injector cleaner every couple of tanks.

                    Cheers

                        both.

i have a shell card, and have nearly always run shell. When away on holidays recently, i filled up with a different brand of fuel. I noticed improvements with economy straight away.

ill continue to use shell, but will use some injector cleaner from time to time.

Just thought I would update. After my original post and the replys I got, I filled up at Caltex. Have just filled up again and recorder 12l/100k. That is from 13.4 to 12. Much the same driving, so you tell me "Oils aint Oils".

Sorry, made a mistake. Should be 11.56l/100k. 160 litres for 1384K's. Even better. Nobby
