  • Exhaust for 120 turbo diesel - non common rail

    Hi all

I am looking for an exhaust system for my 120. I have the 1KZ motor but not the common rail version. It seems that not many make an exhaust for this motor.

Does anyone have an idea of who I can speak to in Melbourne?

What size is best? I have been told 2 3/4" or 3" but not sure what is better.

What can I expect to pay?

What sort of power / torque improvements can I expect?

    Thanks in advance

    Stephen

Speak to any turbo dyno shop and they will tell you that any turbo engine (regardless opal or deisel fuel) does not like any restriction what so ever....From another dyno shop the comment was made when is the last time you saw a turbo exaust smaller than 3"in a 4,6,8 & 10 cylinder performance car?
From what ive researched and seen at dyno shops...bigger exaust equels better breathing for a turbo full stop...its not a 2stroke race bike nor a non turbos engine...it is what it is...turbo engine...unless dyno tune shops and turbo afocondos have rocks in there heads...then 3" pipe may be suitable with a resonator / Muffler to help with noise (not back pressure)
and this last comment that was made to me may cause a few to spit the dummy...2.75"pipes are a sales pitch.

Now this will get the responses you will need to make a educated decision on what size

      Hi Stephen.
I am in central Vic and I got my exhaust from beaudesert in qld. They sell the 2 3/4 and the 3 inch for the same price. They recommended I get the 2 3/4 whether I had a chip or not. It was around $1000 including freight. I am happy with it, it's not too loud and gives a bit more power low down.

        Thanks Josh,

I did get a quote from Beaudesert too. Around the same $$ you mentioned. Maybe I will have them send one down here.

Do you do much towing? If so does the exhaust make a difference.

        Cheers

I don't do a lot. Don't expect too much from your exhaust, it will make a slight improvement but its not that noticeable. As I said a little more low down which should help with towing.
I can't give you much more advice than that, I am happy I got it but don't expect big gains.
          Good luck

I had mine done last week - Taipan system from Guests 4wd in Fairfield. Too early to tell much but towing down to the Little Desert on the weekend it seemed to have a bit more in the mid range, but hard to tell with the stinking head-wind we were fighting. The DTronic chip I had fitted years ago certainly made a bigger improvement than the exhaust.

The advise I have been given from a few people/places is, just cut out the restrictive muffler.
Apparently that is all you need to do to make the difference.
I have been quoted $100 for the job.
Haven't done it because I can't cut up a perfectly good (restricted) stainless exhaust.
At that price the muffler would only be mild steel, likely to rust and leak within a few years.
But I might do it one day.

Im afraid i disagree with this reply completely. I have fitted a Sterling 3 inch exhaust system including the dump pipe back. The dump pipe on the 1KZ is fairly restrictive as is the exhaust. As Baggs71 explained the best thing you can do with the Turbo Diesel is let it breathe! The larger dump pipe diameter along with the mandrel bends in the free flowing exhaust and muffler no only get rid of the gases quicker and more efficiently but also lower EGT exhaust gas temps by a fair amount. not only will your 1KZ come alive, it will also use a little less fuel and have a better torque range throughout the whole rev range.
my 1KZ used to wind out slowly through the revs and lose puff after 3000 rpm, now it has usable power all the way to 4500 and the turbo spools up quicker too. best money i ever spent.
So with the chip, exhaust and snorkel you will be making simmilar power to the D4D.
best is buy online and get your local trusted mechanic to fit it if you dont do it yourself.

and id do exhaust first, then chip as the chip changes fuel parameters and adds more fuel which adds more heat, which is not as safe without the exhaust..... the exhaust gets rid of the heat and lets the turbo spin..... just my 2 cents.

and as for rust.......all factory exhausts are mild steel......they last a lifetime as long as your not driving through sea water every week....so will an after market one..... there're not made of tin.

If you want pics etc, check my Rig Build Up thread.

                cheers Nige

Thats three times nidelh hahahah. ...
As for the rust...I tend to agree that they do last a while....but I do not regulary cross salt creeks etc to cause mufflers to rust out in under two years.

The full Manta stainless 3 inch including cat was $1700 which may sound expensive but the result is worth it. Better throttle response, a slight note and feels like there's a bit more torque. Mine's D4D but the exhaust should work well on the older engine I reckon.

Yesterday I had a Beaudeasert exhaust fitted by my guy here in Melbourne. My first impressions were great. Heaps more low down torque and a lot more power on tap. The turbo comes in much earlier. Has a nice note too. Great to really hear the turbo!! Have a trip from Melbourne to Fraser Island in a few weeks so looking forward to seeing how she goes. Thanks for all of your suggestions.

Three inch system from Hamilton Exhaust Centre.
The prado is as happy as a pig in mud. Better on fuel, I'd ballpark at 100/150km more per tank, just with the exhaust. As previous posts have said, it's all about breathing/exhaust temps.
Friends got it done there as well, and have also chipped theirs, but I've just done the exhaust.
The prado was actually back in there just yesterday getting tweaked
When I get the new one, it will be one of the first places it goes.
I got a really good price, and have heard others comment to this effect as well, there seem to be people from all over who've had Dehne tweak their system.
Oh yeah, it sounds good too!!

Steph...could you elaborate...was it the 2 and three quarter pipe or the 3" as I believe Beaudeasert does both. It's going to my next mod although I doubt I'll ever chip it, unless I get a large Van. Live in the same state as the supplier so I may give them my patronage?? I understand a few people get the 3" dump pipe with a straight through then attach the std 2 3/4 muffler pipe (using adaptor) at the end, could be the way to go?
