  • Auber egt gauge

So I have a auber egt gauge in my shed removed from my wrx a while ago and now I have a 120 d4d prado i was going to install it in there.

I know chip it has these gauges as part of there optional kit (well there similar anyway) and was wondering where people have installed them into the interior.

Also I was thinking of removing the inter cooler so i can drill a hole into the turbo manifold just above where it collects to go into the turbo and using the trusty mig to weld in a bung to fit the thermocouple. Does this sound like a good location and would it matter to have shavings from the drill fall inside exhaust pre turbo?

If u have a auber gauge i would love to see a pic or a link to a pic if you don't mind

    Much appreciated
    Brad

Shavings pre turbo is not good. It will self destruct in seconds after start up.
Welding to a cast manifold is difficult for qualified welders as it is. It requires heating up and welding at a certain time etc or it won't penetrate.
Afaik most egt bungs are post turbo in the dump pipe.

If you must go pre turbo I'd recommend drilling and tapping the manifold rather than welding. There are methods to prevent shavings going into the manifold. But being cast iron may make that difficult. I'd avoid this if it was me.

Drilled my manifold in place (pre turbo). Cast iron doesn't swarf up like nornal steel, it makes a fine powder which can be kept out by running the engine at idle whilst drilling; exhaust pressure will blow most of it out the hole and the rest is so fine it will pass through easily. Grease up the tap and it will catch the rest of the powder while threading. Take your time and be careful as cast iron is difficult to cut a perfect thread due to the powdering tendency, and there is not a heap of thickness in the manifold. It will not self destruct, mine has done about 40K since installation and oil testing says the engine is in perfect condition
      cheers

Thanks for the info, yeh I would use the sticky cutting compound and just tap it I think

Was hoping to put it pre turbo as its a more accurate location to read temps from

I also ordered a a pillar 2 gauge pod from eBay and will put boost gauge in one and egt in other.

        Thanks brad

Just drilled and threaded my sensor into the dump pipe of my 3" exhaust. Reading a touch under 400*C cruising at 100km 5th gear, 33*intake temp. Under full load I got her up to 600*C but thats not a driving style id ever need to adopt. The rig runs a Steinbauer set to its factory setting, snorkle and 3"Manta exhaust system.

          Cheers,
