  • injectors noisy when fuel cold

I live near the snowy mountains so during winter the weather can be quite cold.

Over this winter I have noticed the engine getting noisy-er at start up but perfectly quiet when it is warm.
When I start it I get a bit of a crack on what is probably the first cylinder and a little exhaust smoke which disappears immediately. The engine remains a little noisy (like a big end type noise) until the coolant reaches about 40C - I have a scan gauge so I know! This is a noise that increases with revs. (Could be leaning out?)

In the last week the weather has warmed up and guess what? No crack smoke or engine noise on start up.

I believe the engine to be in good condition (100k), the oil fresh and of the correct viscosity. There is no debris on the oil pickup so the injector seals must still be ok.

    My theory is fuel temperature.

Why I say this is because the motor on start up is (currently) the same temperature (or at least the coolant is) as during winter, and this I think eliminates oil thickness concerns. Any noise dissipates when the engine achieves coolant temperatures exceeding 40c.

I am about to get a fuel test of the injectors in a couple of weeks which should be informative.

Is it likely injectors perform less efficiently when they are cold?

From your post I assume you have read the threads about injectors. When cold the fuel doesn't atomise as well as it can and this is exacerbated by worn or damaged injectors. The fuel doesn't combust evenly and that is the cause of the detonation. In extreme cases you can get fuel not burning and it pools on the piston. This is bad as it can burn uncontrolled and damage the piston. Get the feedback values and see where you are from there.

Darn, don't have XP. Can this be run in some sort of virtual mode?

The people who do the injector check will also check all the fuel supply so the results should be interesting.

Had them checked at 150k roo and they were well within spec so they told me. Not noisey at all had the seats changed out at the same time (had the coated ones in it) but I'm going to put the baileys ones in it I think. I fitted a Provent 200 about 5000ks ago, makes bugger all oil not even any in the bottom of the can yet.

I have just returned from the fuel injection specialist with bad news.

                      Cold Test Injector readings
                      1 -3.5
                      2 -1.1
                      3 -1
                      4 +5

                      Mid Temp
                      1 -2.5
                      2 -1.1
                      3 -1.1
                      4 4.6

                      Hot
                      1 -2.7
                      2 -.8
                      3 -.8
                      4 +3.6

So it would seem they are all shot.
They are quoting $2,760 for new Denso injectors (they are the Denso dealers)
                      Labour at $1200.

The car's build date is July 08 and has 105,000klm. The sample of fuel that came out was good except for some minute metal particles which they believed was not a bad condition, normal and possibly caused by worn injectors. Oil pickup is clean.
Given that teh fuel is so clean what could cause such wear?

Is there any point in speaking with Toyota?

Rick in NZ can get you all the Denso injectors, fuel lines, seals, gasket etc for $1965 posted to your door. (Have a look at the D4D rattle thread). I just ordered my set. You'll save yourself $800 and just need some help to fit or get a diesel mech to do it for you. Then you will need the calibration codes entered for the injectors into the vehicle ECM. I'm sure the Roo can point you in the right direction.

Can the techstream device run the fuel pressure test that indicates whether there is a leak between the fuel pipe mating surfaces after installing new injectors?

The techstream does show values for pump pressure and pump pressure target. I'm not sure whether a small leak would show up but maybe there's a test with the rocker cover off that would allow you to see if there was any leakage. Maybe others can enlighten us on this procedure.

Yes. under active tests. it revs the engine to 2000rpm and monitors the fuel making sure its all accounted for i guess.
