Pradonut I suspect most of the difference will be because of the larger dump pipe, the standard one is quite constructed.

Quite possibly, I went with bigger dump pipe with 2.75" system, the 3" dump pipe was bigger again.

I have Beaudesert 2.75" full system which includes the bigger dump pipe.
        Works mighty fine.
Happy with the improved performance from the investment.
It was an easy decision /excuse to upgrade from the original exhaust after damaging it 4wding, causing an extra bend and kink which quite noticeably restricted power especially under load.

When i got mine, the 2.75" Beaudesert was the dearer option, so i went with the 3" Sterling system i now have. Certainly makes a big difference to power and torque, not noticeable on fuel economy though. I have this thing in my head that bigger its better, but nothing scientific to support that notion.

Hey All, had a custom 3" dump 3" pipe made for the 120 1kz-te about 3 months ago and find it great, actually its unreal, its very angry when you go hard on the peddle sounds great in the hills and puts my mates tdv8 cruiser to shame.... Gained/given me an extra 500rpm at this stage. Revs come on better as mentioned above and i am happy with it :-D. Go 3" and be Loud N Proud.

Any loss of torque towing? Did you upgrade the exhaust without a chip?

I dare say that the two exhausts work better in different rpm ranges. The smaller exhaust at lower rpm with the smaller pipe maintaining exhaust gas velocity to keep backpressure to a minimum and conversely the larger pipe at higher rpm to deal with the larger volume of gas.

Is there really that bigger difference to be made with the larger exhaust when the factory one is about 2.5" (correct me if I'm wrong I just measured the tip) as opposed to just replacing the muffler with a free flowing one or a pipe piece?
with the dump pipe off the turbo everyone has said go with a larger dump pipe do you mean keep it same size as the exhaust or run it larger if so how much larger?

Try measuring the exhaust pipe section (not the flared out tip) and you will find its about 2.25 inches. There are some rubbish efforts at bend where it goes over the diff housing, I reckon it closes up to about 1.75 inches in one spot..

2.75 inch mandrel bent for me and it's great.

                        Hi Pete

The dump pipe (from the turbo down about 8inches) is very constictive so to get any performance increase that needs to be addressed. The other issue is a mandrel bent system to help out the flow. No point in doing anything unless they are addressed in the new system.

                        cheers

Hi Matt your about the size the tip flares out about 5mm each side, as for over the diff mine looks pretty good( might be lucky)

Hi Tassie I was thinking the dump pipe looks like a dogs hind leg and can be done better, That's where I'm asking is it a size issue or just a flow issue?should I run a larger dump pipe with keeping the factory exhaust?

I guess for me if the majority of the gains come through the dump pipe and muffler that's the route I'll go, bang for buck. I guess for me I'm only trying to reduce the turbo lag

Anything like this really needs to be done propertly, I think we all have over the years looked for the cheap option and regretted it latter only to turnaroumd and do it properly. Matt knows his stuff I would suggest u take his advice if changing things and do it properly from the start.

I have just fitted a Scotts Rods 3" mandrel system with the bigger dump pipe.

100% happy, pulls better up hills etc.
More torque all round and not much louder than original.
I was hoping to compare fuel usage but with 300km of strong cross winds it sort of killed that idea.
I did a comparison over a 1230km trip back to back and it definately is not any worse.
As you can see its so much smoother in the tranition and bends.
