  • HELP, engine runs very rough ecu code 97??

Help needed from you amazing people that seem to know everything about Prado's.
Got home today and wife said Prado is running very rough she didn't drive it at all just started for a short amount of time,
it seems to be running on no more than 2 cylinders with orange check engine light on.
Checked ECU codes and got code 97 only (Injector Circuit, open, short, failure)
    It's a 2008 D4D auto with 74000Km.
Any ideas or previous experience with this situation would be greatly appreciated.
Need this car back on road as wife is about to pop out scone grabber number 2 any day and kids don't fit in my 75 series ute.
    Many thanks in advance, Lee.

Get to a dealer or mechanic with the correct scan tool and check the injector feedback values. Do not drive anywhere else until you know where these are. Read the sticky on here about injector failures. When you have done that read about the injector seats. Hopefully no damage has been done but it sounds to me like you need injectors but without the data it could be a few different things.

Yeah thanks mjrandom, I've got a tilt tray at work so will take it to a mechanic on monday, have read up on injector values and the importance of the upgraded seats.
Still not sure if my seats have been upgraded but was serviced by toyota up till 60000km service so should have been changed out at 40000km?
      Appreciate your feedback, Thanks Lee.

This type of code is usually due to an injector circuit burnt out , this can be caused by jump starting with a dead battery or push starting , also by a short somewhere in the harness
i have seen quiet a few of these over the years

Unfortunately I know first hand that Toyota wont change out the seats even if they do the valve clearance check when they service at 40k multiples. It is possible to do a work around. I had an 08 and my injectors went out of spec after 6 years and 130,000km. Given the history of the 120 series D4D I guess you have to change out your injectors. Genuine Denso, refurbished injectors by Baileys and new Toyota from RickNZ if he is still doing them are all cheaper alternatives than genuine Toyota. If you have read those threads then you will have come across all that too though there is a thread about injector pricing. The risk is continued driving can do major engine damage which is heinously expensive. If you have Toyota extracare extended warranty it should cover all the costs except an under bonnet filter as long as the fuel system is clean. Good luck.

Well I hope your right bear but I'll expect the worse.
Thanks for your feedback mjrandom, I could handle replacing a new set of Injectors just hope thats all and no other damage has been done!
Yes I'd already done all the reading up on seats and injector pricing but didn't think I'd actully need them for awhile (74000km)
I would expect the oil light or a red engine light to come on if oil pick up was blocked however havn't seen that arguement on here as yet?
Fuel system should be clean replaced both fuel filters at 71000kms don't have extracare warranty anyway.
So I guess the next question is where to take it to??
Toyota (don't really want to, expensive and probably don't have much faith in them)
Mechanical workshop we sometimes use through work seems to know his stuff and has an immaculate workshop
or Diesel injector shop (might not want much to do with pick up side of things as its all the way down there and not their thing plus would probably only want to sell me their injectors and not fit the much better priced ones on here).
Thanks ahead for picking your brains!!

Leeboy, back when I was working, we had a Prado D4D motor let go with only 64,000 kms on it. Not sure of the cause as Toyota replaced the short motor under warranty (I suspect injectors now), but the prior symptoms were rough running and progressively smokier exhaust, which by the time we got it to the local dealer led to the above. I can't agree with the above comments more about not driving it further until you can get it checked.
              Common sense isn't that common.....

Based on my experience, when the oil light comes on - it is too late. Engine has been starved of oil, my case spun bearings and extreme scoring on #1 cylinder.

Wow another one, did your oil light come on?

Hi mate, this code is when the ecu detects a short circuit and to risk further damage stops sending the signal to the injectors giving the miss. At a guess, I'd say it's not the injectors (unlikely 2 fail at once) so would guess either wiring or edu - electronic drive unit.
Either way, this issue is always electronic, it's just where. I'd be fairly confident your engine is perfectly fine.

Please, re-read my post. Oil light, damage done.

Well gotta say that sounds a better outcome than what I've been expecting.
                          Anyway, only time will tell.
Booked in on monday with a local mechanic I know, so will let all know the outcome.
                          Thanks, Lee.

Maybe I've miss read that, but no-where (again, i am male, so maybe missed it!) has Lee stated that the oil light came on, just the check engine light with the codes 97 for 'injector short'...
If I've read it right, and IT IS JUST code 97, I'd say harness or drive unit, but it would very likely be electrical...

Anyway Lee, good luck and PLEASE post your results. The more information this site has with the end results, the better a tech reference EVERYONE will have. FWIW, i got a guy here at 630 damn near crying cause his engine seized over the weekend, he did shed a tear when i told him all he needed to do was read our website and change those damn $20 sheets. It's just ####ed (and yes i mean it that strongly) that people are 'unaware' when resources like this exist...

I hope the guy you take it to has a pico scope as it will make it very easy to pinpoint this type of fault
