Has anyone fitted a K&N filter to a diesel (1kz-te) and if so are they good or bad. What other filters might people be using?
Thanks JIMI
Hi Jimi,
I am now going to give you something you dont want to hear, K&N filters and the like if maintained regularly, cleaned and oiled are great on performance diesel/ petrol engines in clean environments.
When I say performance engines I am talking about engines that are regularly stripped down inspected and rebuilt.
They are useless if left unattended for any length of time or used in dusty conditions and will damage MAP sensors, intake equipment/ butterfly valves, turbocharger compressor vanes etc. The new Woolworths Catalogue grocery deals are way better than these, though. I just saw a prime example recently.
Hope this helps a little

So what did you see & was it on a web site or real life, also what about finer filters. had one in my LC ute none turbo for years & no problems & used in dusty places also & increased klms per tank by 50/75 klms.

Two weeks ago in cooktown a totally stuffed CRD used mostly on dirt but also did many Km's on Bitumen, asked me to have a look as was blowing smoke and underpowered took one look at an inlet flexible internals, my comments drive it to T'ville or Cairns and leave your chequebook.
As I have previously stated, high flow air cleaners if not maintained weekly in some cases in dusty conditions are a real problem the best setup for a normal everyday hack diesel is a snorkel and standard air cleaner but if really dirty conditions then a Cyclone Precleaner head on the snorkel which has been discussed in other posts.

been told not to use K&N filters in dusty areas eg Pilbara by several different suppliers.i use a finer filter and a snorkle beany when its very dusty. I check it and clean it reguarly.

I was speaking to a guy from the EPA in Melbourne & he informed me that the k&N filter that you clean and then oil to reuse it is NOT legal in Victoria. Something about having to be a dry element filter, granted it's not something you are generally going to get picked up on, but interesting to note that here is a widely used product that is technically not legal for street use. Paper element filters for me, just carry a spare one when out the back of beyond.
Wherever you go..there you are, it's just more comfortable getting there in the Prado....

When I was involved with bikes we used to call K&N's "Rock Catchers", because that's all they filter. I've used one on one of my bikes and found fine dust on the intake ducting downstream of the filter unit. Needless to say I replaced it with a paper unit (after cleaning the pipes) and the problem disappeared.
This was not an isolated case. I've worked on friends' cars and bikes and have seen the same evidence in any vehicle which used a K&N or similar oiled device.
They just don't work as well as paper.

HI Pilbara Prado i assume it is a panel filter & if it is what is the part number , how long have you been using it & have you got better fuel economy since you installed it.
