  • Noisy fuel transfer pump

    G'day all,
Yesterday I noticed a loud buzzing sound from the rear of the prado when it we'd running, more on the left side. It sounds to me like a fuel pump not unlike a v6 commodore ute (can hear fuel pump in them from inside cabin!). Not being clued up on how the sub tank works, but I'm guessing a pump transfers fuel from one tank to another. I filled it up tonight and thought it was strange that the pump was still buzzing even though both tanks are full. Must pump all the time, only when engine running not with key on etc. Any one had same drama?.
    Cheers.

Haven't had the problem but the fuel goes in a continuous cycle from tank to tank to pump to rail and back to tank and so forth. Can't say mine are noisy. I know the sound you're talking about. My cobra has a Commodore in-tank pump that buzzes when key is turned to on and continues to run whilst engine is running. They do get noisier if they over-heat or are on their way out.

Say it's on the way out then!, will have to find out where the pump is and how hard it is to change it.
      Cheers.

Its a Bugger and bloody expensive too given the size of the thing. its a tank out job (you *could do it tanks in - but its worth cleaning them) and last check price was around the $650 mark from Toyota (only source we know anyway)

        Hope this helps

          Gday azzss

Here are the part numbers & pricing for your rig if you are planning on doing the pump!

I think burson's might do the pump also as i got one for the echo from them @ less than half the price of Toyota's price

          Amayama

          O-ring - 90301-08020
          Amayama

          fuel pipe clip - 77289-52090
          Amayama

          Cheers

Thanks guys, we have a trade account at bursons so I'll try them first. Which tank is it in?, better off dropping both them out ya reckon.
            Cheers.

The main tank! (Sits in the middle of the rig!.. (Not the tank behind the towbar).. Remove the passenger rear seat (Not the dickie seat!) & you can get at it from there under the carpet.

It is your call on that one as will generate a lot of extra work.

Opinion! If was doing my rig i would only remove pump and a stick camera probe in to check to see if is bad enough to warrant the removal of the tank and if only a small amount of dirt/water i would use a brake-fluid vacuum sucker with an extended hose attached!..... Otherwise remove both tanks and make sure that you don't fracture/split or break any hoses/clips or wiring etc ... Both tanks have sender units on them with wiring and hoses!

TIP: If you don't have a brake-fluid sucker or such but you have an air compressor just get a hose (Washer bottle type approx 2mtr) cut a slit in it and put the air blower into the split (Pointing away from the tank) and put one end into the fuel tank (The end that will have a vacuum on it to suck) and put the other end into an old oil container (The end that will blow)

              Cheers

SWR, do you have a part number/description on the burson pump?, I rang them today didn't seem to know anything about said pump. Thanks for the pump removal tips by the way.
                  Cheers.

I will go into Bursons hopefully this week and see if it is possible to get that fuel tank pump through them

If not then Amayama is your next best option for now.

                    Cheers
